Presentation transcript:

Volcanic soil is extremely nutrient rich and is perfect soil for growing crops such as in Hawaii. The nutrients comes from ash and weathered lava. Volcanic soil

VOLCANIC AREAS OFTEN CONTAIN SOME OF THE MOST MINERAL RICH SOILS IN THE WORLD This is ideal for farming. Lava and the weathered material (rock naturally broken down) form nutrient rich soil that can be cultivated to produce healthy crops and high yield harvests. The soil naturally contains: -  Potash  Nitrogen  Sulphur In Iceland they use the geothermal energy to heat greenhouses where tomatoes are grown on the rich soil.

Granite is formed through volcanic eruptions, it a very durable building material and is also very valuable. Granite Stone

Geothermal heat is used to generate electricity in some countries, it a very cheap and environmentally friendly way to create energy. This is quite common in countries such as Canada where the temperature can change quite drastically between Summer and Winter. Geothermal energy Watch this video on geothermal energy:

PEOPLE CAN ALSO USE THE NATURAL POWER OF A VOLCANO GEOTHERMAL ENERGY GEO (the earth) THERMAL (heat) magma. This is energy created by using the steam from underground which is heated by the earths magma. The steam is used to drive turbines in geothermal power stations producing energy for domestic and industrial use. In countries such as Iceland this is the main source of power, it is cheap and kind to the environment as it uses natural sources of fuel ( heat from the earth).

Diamonds and precious metals are sometimes brought to the surface of the Earth in a rare type of magma. Diamonds and precious metals

VOLCANIC ACTIVITY BRINGS THE EARTH’S RICHES TO THE SURFACE Lava Lava from deep within the earth contains minerals which can be mined once the lava has cooled.  gold  silver  diamonds  copper  zinc Mining towns develop around volcanoes

VOLCANOES ATTRACT TOURISTS TO AN AREA this creates many jobs for local people in the tourism industry work in hotels, restaurants and gift shops locals are employed as tour guides. Apart from the volcanoes, hot springs or geysers attract tourists e.g. Strokkur and Blue Lagoon in Iceland

Volcanic locations are often major tourist attractions for some areas and they generate money and jobs for the people living near them such as those living near Mount Vesuvius in Italy. Tourism

Geothermal spas are located near to volcanoes. The water is cooled down and pumped into lagoons where people bathe in the warm nutrient rich waters. Tourists from all over the world come to visit these sorts of resorts. Watch this video from the ‘Blue Lagoon’ resort in Iceland: Geothermal Spas
