Up in the clouds …. How are clouds formed? Warm moist air rises because it is less dense. As it rises it cools and becomes more dense so it can’t hold.

Cumulus [cumulus] The word cumulus is a Latin word which means “heap” or “pile.” Cumulus Clouds

Cumulus Clouds are named for the way that they look in the sky. When you see cumulus clouds, they will be white puffy clouds that are piled up in the sky. Usually they are found in the lower or middle part of the atmosphere on a nice day. They might remind you of a cotton ball floating in the sky. These clouds are good for cloud watching... if you use your imagination they may turn into interesting shapes. Stratus clouds usually mean that the weather will be nice. Remember: The word cumulus means “heap” or “pile.”

Cumulus Cloud Picture 1 Can you see how a cumulus cloud looks fluffy and white, like a cotton ball?

Cumulus Cloud Picture 2 Use your imagination. What do you think this cumulus cloud looks like?

Cumulus Cloud Picture 3 Don’t you think that cumulus clouds are cool? They can form into interesting “heaps” or “piles.”

Cumulus Cloud Picture 4 Remember, the word cumulus means “heap” or “pile.” Cumulus clouds get their name because they form into big and fluffy heaps or piles.
