Developing your fashion sense-Knowing how to achieve a well-dress look Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 1

 Wardrobe- All the clothes and accessories you have to wear.  Accessories- Items worn to accent clothing  Inventory – A list of clothing items on hand. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 2

 Fashion- Anything that is currently in.  Style – A distinctive form or design of a garment.  Fad- A fashion that is very popular for a short time.  Classic- A traditional style that can stay in fashion for a very long time. Ex- The T- shirt.  Status symbol- An item or clothing that gives the wearer a special feeling of importance. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 3

 Fashion Designers- They create Style of clothes we see in magazines, newspapers, catalogs and stores.  Media Events and Popular People- What we wear and how we look is often inspired by them.  Foreign Influence- Other countries have had an influence upon what we wear. Ex: China influence- oriental prints and silks being used in clothing. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 4

 Technology - Modern developments in the textile industry have changed the fashion industry. Ex: Microfibers, like Polar Fleece, have drastically changed sports fashion.  Groups - Large groups of people have also influenced fashion. Ex: People with disability have added Velcro opening for easier opening/closing. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 5

 Protection- keeps us comfortable and protects us from the weather/climate.  Decoration- such as caps, vest are used as decoration.  Status- Some garments are worn to reflect a person’s position/role in the community  Identification- Clothes tell as much about you as what you say. Uniforms May signify that you hold at particular job.  Modesty- The way we wear clothes and the type of clothing we wear suggest our personal sense of modesty.( What people feel is the proper way for clothing to cover the body.)  Standards of Dress-  Are the clothes that are acceptable in your community/occasion your wearing them to/for.  Climate  Your need to be warm or cool.  Activities  Think about your activities will you be  walking  running  Swimming  Dancing- a formal dance Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 7

 Even clothing that is comfortable or casual tells something about the person wearing them.  People often use clothing as away to express themselves.  How do you express yourself through your clothing choices?  First impressions – The clothes you wear will contribute to the impression you make on other people. Elements of Style Fit Fit marries clothes to the body. Fit defines proportion and silhouette. Fit may be classically tailored or deconstructed, oversize or snug. Comfort Clothes that are not comfortable often stay in the closet. Standards of comfort improve each decade because of changes in fabrics, human nature and changing dress codes. Color Color coordination is the basis for wardrobe planning Fabric Fabric determines quality and durability as well as comfort. Appropriateness When clothing is appropriate, form follows function. Practicality Practicality depends on comfort, care, and durability. Practicality relates to where and when one would wear a garment, and how it fits in with the clothes you own.  Make a shopping list before you leave home.  Comparison shop before you buy.  Watch for sales and end of season bargains. However avoid buying sales items just because they are on sale.  Resist impulse buying. Follow your wardrobe plan.  Shop at stores that have a good reputation for making exchanges/returns.  Consider the upkeep on anything you before buying. Dry cleaning is expensive.  Check for good quality fabrics and constructions.  Plan accessories that will go with many outfits.  Save all sales receipts and hangtags. Mrs. Reed's Work and Family Studies 14

Example below

 Remove Jewelry- Could snag or catch on clothing.  Prevent pulls and tears, When taking clothing off hangers, carefully unbutton, or unzip.  Watch out for Dirt/Makeup- Make sure you have clean hands when handling clothing.  Speak up – If a garment is damaged or missing a button, report it to salesperson.  Help restock – If you do not purchase garment, return it to correct rack/shelf or give to salesperson  Do Not Shoplift- Pay for the clothing you can afford, and create budget to purchase others later.
