LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 1 HL-LHC IR Quadrupole Magnet Project Overview GianLuca Sabbi Internal Review of proposed US contributions to HL-LHC Fermilab, June 10, 2013

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 2 Agenda and Presentation Outline Presentation outline: LARP magnet program goals and technical milestones Status of HiLumi design study Prototype development plan, CERN/GARD contributions Construction project plans Deliverables, schedule and funding profile Specific challenges and risk factors (near/medium term)

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 3 LARP Magnet Program Goal: Develop Nb 3 Sn quadrupoles for the LHC luminosity upgrade Operate at higher field (larger aperture) and temperature margin R&D phases: : technology development: conductor, coil, structure : length scale-up from 1 to 4 meters : incorporation of accelerator quality features Program achievements to date: TQ models (90 mm aperture, 1 m length) reached 240 T/m gradient LQ models (90 mm aperture, 4 m length) reached 220 T/m gradient HQ models (120 mm aperture, 1 m length) reached 184 T/m gradient Current activities: Optimization of HQ: full demonstration of accelerator quality Fabrication of 4-meter Long HQ (LHQ) coils and test in mirror Design and planning of the MQXF IR Quadrupole development

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 4 LARP R&D Milestones SQ models: Conductor/structure performance in simplified configuration LR models Racetrack coil & shell structure scale-up from 0.3 m to 4 m TQ models Technology for cos2  coils, new conductors, high stress test LQ models Scale up of cos2  quadrupole configuration to 4 m length HQ models Aperture scale-up, stress/protection limits, accelerator quality LHQ models Scale-up of optimized coil technology to 4 m length

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 5 Current activities  Design of “QXF” 150 mm short models and prototypes (LARP+CERN) Main focus on cable R&D and tooling design Forward look at other aspects to ensure compatibility with requirements  Completing R&D in support of QXF and HL-LHC design HQ02 test underway, with very positive results  Testing up to 15kA, 170 T/m (82% SSL at 1.9K, 91% SSL at 4.5K)  Fast training to 80% operating level: 1-2 quenches  Flat ramp rate dependence up to A/s  Large reduction (x10-20) of eddy current harmonics with core LHQ coil fabrication in process, first mirror test by the end of the year HQ03 starting (with GARD support): uniform coils, reproducibility

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 6 HiLumi Design Study Progress  07/12: Choice of aperture and technology,150 mm aperture Nb 3 Sn  03/13: Defined baseline IR layout (aperture, length, gradient)  Critical new information is continuously being provided: Cooling options and corresponding channel sizes Shielding options and corresponding radiation doses Field quality tables and limits on individual effects  Main outcome: we have sufficient flexibility in the overall design to find solutions compatible with available magnet technology Interfacing with work packages on optics, layout/correctors, energy deposition/shielding, cooling, powering & quench protection Performance provided by current conductors, epoxy resins, coil technology, support structures, is acceptable for HL-LHC Additional improvements will benefit the project but are not a precondition to Nb 3 Sn IR Quadrupoles implementation

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 7 Prototype Development Plan Aperture selection (July 2012) triggered a revision of the LARP plan: Initial proposal: continuation of 120 mm program in parallel with 150 mm short models, then scale up (first long prototype test ~2017) DOE guidance: curtail 120 mm program and increase QXF resources to test a long prototype ASAP (by end of 2015) Current strategy: work with CERN and GARD to augment resources Preserve critical elements of 120 mm program (w/GARD support) Strong (~2/3) CERN role in short model program (SQXF) 4-m long prototypes (LQXF) entirely under US responsibility Key milestones of prototype development program: SQXF01 tested 4/15 (LARP+CERN); 2 more in 8/16, 2/17 (CERN) LQXF01 tested 3/16; LQXF02 in 4/17, LQXF03 in 9/17 (all LARP)

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 8 GARD Contributions  Four GARD program in the superconductor and magnet areas Conductor/materials: BNL, CDP (supports development in industry) Full materials/technology/magnet capabilities: FNAL, LBNL  Discussions of possible contributions started last October: several video- meetings and one meeting at CM20 with CERN participation  A LARP document was issued to explain program needs  Updated GARD proposals were recently delivered: CDP: conductor procurement and process improvements for production, conductor development BNL: strand/cable QA, conductor studies FNAL: test facility upgrade, mirror structure, conductor development LBNL: HQ03, design/analysis, conductor development, rad-hard epoxy  Key elements provisionally incorporated in plans presented at project review  Discussions toward an integrated plan to be resumed in the coming weeks

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 9 Construction Project Proposal  Prepared in response to DOE request following the 2012 review  Funding envelope: 200 M$ construction + 4 more years of LARP at constant funding level (12.4M$)  Planning group formed with contributors from all Labs  “Scope selection” proposal submitted to DOE in December  Magnet plan includes:  Completion of R&D on 120 mm aperture models  Development of 150 mm “QXF” prototypes (with CERN)  Infrastructure upgrades for magnet production  Fabrication of cold masses for Q1 and Q3 elements: 4 m long; 2 pre-series, 16 cold masses and 2 spares 2 production lines for coils and assembly All magnets tested in the US before shipping to CERN

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 10 Project schedule FY CD0 2 CD month

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 11 Funding Profile Total IR Quad R&D, prototype and production: 172M$ Production includes 35% contingency (design, labor, materials) External contributions (CERN, GARD) not included Project management not included M$

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 12 Assumed external contributions  Prototype development phase CERN: HQ testing; QXF short model program (tooling, coils, structure, testing); 250kg of conductor ordered in FY14 (under discussion) CDP: Conductor procurements for about 500kg in FY13-14 LBNL: Labor for HQ03 coil fabrication, magnet assembly, first test FNAL: Labor for QXF mirror and LQXF test stand  Production phase CERN: Half of the cold masses, integration in cryostat and final testing of US cold masses  External contributions are not included in LARP budget tables presented at the review  Additional contributions proposed by GARD (supporting studies, characterization and qualification of new conductors) are less critical and were not included in the baseline plan, pending further discussion

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 13 Challenges and risk factors  Transitions from R&D to project-like to project Several aspects: technical, organization, funding (e.g. FY15-16)  Expanded collaboration to augment resources in prototype phase LARP deliverables critically depend on external contributions So far, tentative agreements but no formal framework/commitments Differences in design approaches, goals, organization, time zones…  Distribution of work among labs during production LARP was directed and evolved into an integrated “virtual-lab” model Critical to R&D success, but less efficient in production Key expertise and infrastructure is distributed across labs  Plans for magnet testing prior to shipping to CERN No facility available for LQXF; proposals from FNAL & BNL Consider test goals, cost/schedule for facility upgrade and operations More analysis is needed - planning a dedicated review later this year

LARP review, Fermilab, 6/10/2013Magnet Project Overview – G. Sabbi 14 Summary  Successful R&D leading to selection of Nb3Sn as baseline for HL-LHC  Integrated design approach by HiLumi DS work packages: global optimization to exploit advantages of Nb 3 Sn and cope with limitations  DOE guidance following the 2012 review led to scope selection proposal and reorganization of the magnet program  Baseline plans, schedule and budget were developed as part of the scope selection proposal and have been refined in recent months  Schedule: task durations are realistic but prototype development has overlapping steps  Budget: Funding is tight especially at the start; significant contributions from CERN and GARD programs have been assumed based on tentative agreements and will need to be formalized in the coming months
