TMG Data on Tablets and Cell Phones March 2016 John Frank
Original Idea Developed by Don Ferguson “How To Make an iPad Useful” Victorian GUM News, September 2014
Why use iPad for TMG Data? iPad is the personal choice for many people. It is light, portable and flexible If you are using an iPad personally, unlike the web, you may want to include data for living people
Three Part Problem Extract data out of TMG to a readable data format Transport the data to the tablet Software that can locate and read data
Objective Use the Second Site version of TMG data and move the data to an iPad- no update capability Demonstrate data movement - not features, or exhibits Clyde Roby and Paul Blackburn discussed the Second Site options in a November presentation 2014 and December 2014 RUG newsletter article
iPad Issues iPad does not have CD drive or USB port Safari, the default iPad internet browser, can not read open local files Directories (folders) are not visible on iPad
Possible Approaches to TMG Data Transfer from PC to iPad Via iTunes – Don Ferguson Via Dropbox Via attachment
Don Ferguson’s Approach Use John Cardinal’s Six Steps to Second Site Second Site produces two directories: “name- i” and “name-o” Where “name” is the what you provided at step two in John Cardinal’s SS directions Zip the “name-o” files
Zip “name-o” folder To compress (or zip) a file or folder Locate the file or folder that you want to compress. Right-click the file or folder, point to Send to, and then click Compressed (zipped) folder. A new compressed folder is created in the same location. To rename it, right-click the folder, click Rename, and then type the new name.
Don Ferguson’s Approach Connect the iPad to the PC by cable The iPad appears as a device on the PC Use iTunes in conjunction with a software package called GoodReader on the iPad to move the Second Site data files from the PC to the iPad
