Environmental Control Systems helping disabled and older people John Shermer 21st September 2005

Environmental Control Systems A specialist area of Assistive Technology utilising advances in microelectronics A system that enables persons with mobility problems control aspects of their immediate environment Studies, audits and anecdotal observations have shown benefits for users, carers and healthcare providers

Remote Control of.. door lock, alarm, intercom telephone (fixed line and mobile), warden call, pager, social alarm power sockets, lights, curtains, electric beds and chairs TV/teletext, Satellite/Cable, Hifi, Video, DVD door/window opener, lifts computer (to work, shop, surf the net)

Benefits of Environmental Control Systems Findings of a study by Jenny Harmer involving 16 ECS users ( BJOT,6 Sept 1999) 1.Improvements reported in all aspects of functions evaluated 2. 82% reported that they needed less home care during the day (by up to several hours per day) 3. Provision of ECS had increased independence, feelings of self worth and control over their environment

Cost Benefit Providing ECS reduces amount of care needed Cost of carep/hr £20 p/week £700 Cost of home care with SRS Lite Capital Cost of typical install £2500 Annual Maintenance£ 360 Saved cost on reduced 1hr per day per wk£ 140 Repayment of ECS 20 wks Payback is achieved in 5 months

Helping older people to: live safely (i.e. reduce risk of falls) keep secure (i.e. protect against unwelcome visitors) build/restore confidence and self assurance become more independent (i.e. require less care) live at home

ECS helps to prevent falls by: making the difficult tasks (like reaching to close the curtains) easier enabling the user to switch lighting (when going to the bathroom at night) seeing who is at the front door, unlocking/locking door (avoiding rushing to the door) controlling riser/recliner chairs and profiling beds

SRS Lite: Key Features Clock face design Compact, lightweight and portable Tactile, shaped keys for ease of direct selection Backlighting of keys to confirm selection/scanning and use at night High resolution black/white LCD screen Picture based icons confirming choice or providing access to submenus Operated by either direct selection of keys or single or two switch scanning Programmable for up to 65 functions plus up to 25 phone numbers

Key Features cont… Infra-red control of appliances such as TVs Bi-directional radio control (433 MHz) with a range of up to 100m Radio operation (173MHz) of social alarms Rechargeable Lithium battery for improved operation (expect 1-2 weeks’ from single charge) Base station supplied for easy mounting and recharging Voice announcement via speaker or headphones Switches are plugged into the base station or the controller for scanning Intelligent scanning to reduce number of selections required by switch users

If the client needs more functionality?

SRS Intellec

Key Features Powerful remote control device Dual infrared and radio control Programmable for over 2500 functions and 160 telephone numbers Portable and easily mounted by the bed, on the table or on a wheelchair High visibility LCD screen for ease of viewing Picture based menu displaying icons of equipment to be controller Multiple input options – integral keys, single/dual switch and joystick Full speech communication

Speech Communication Synthesised speech – flexibility to meet individual needs for speech outputs Multiple outputs – say phrases, announce commands, speak clock Up to 256 phrases can be programmed (each up to 127 characters) Pronunciation can be controlled Variable settings – volume, speed, pause and tone Phrases are created for client (at time of installation)

Key Features Single function or multiple function (macro) command Capable of integration with power wheelchair, mobile telephony, computers and social alarm /Telecare systems Programmable on site or by phone (using the Robox) Self powered using integral NiMH battery pack (allows up to 2 weeks use) Simple to install and easy to use

Appliances and Accessories Radio switch devices Hands free telephones Door and window operators Intercom and door entry control systems Input devices (e.g. button switches) Mounting equipment

How does the SRS Lite compare with other EC systems?

SRS Lite outperforms RSL Steeper Fox 1.More functions 2.IR and RF transmission 3.Choice of direct access keys as well as switch 4.More compact and lighter 5.Dynamic Screen and display of selection 6.Free-dial telephone 7.Bi-directional feedback 8.Voice Announcement 9.Simpler programming 10.Lower price

Integration with Telecare Ability to activate Tunstall Lifeline home alarm units e.g Enhances the management of risk (especially falls) and delivery of independence for the elderly with mobility problems ECS provides increased feeling of control over the environment throughout the day and not just call for help at time of a risk event ECS and Telecare together make a Enhanced Wise Home System

Movement detector Carbon Monoxide Personal pendant Fall Detector Enhanced Telecare Solution Phone line to contact centre Plus: Temperature Extremes Bed/Chair Occupancy Property Exit Sensor Medical Reminders Smoke detector Flood detector SRS Lite TV, Video, DVD Door entry Hands free telephone Bed and Chair control

Summary Significant benefits associated with the use ECS SRS represents the most advanced ECS available today Strong business case with short term payback Immediately realisable benefits for Kent County Council Significant business benefits when combined with Tunstall Call System
