Start of what would be termed the “British Invasion.” From Liverpool, England. Hit the U.S. in 1964 Appeared on the Ed Sullivan show 73 Million viewers Overnight sensation

Group first formed in 1957 and called themselves the “Quarrymen.” Grew up listening to early American rock and roll. Changed their name to the “Silver Beetles” in imitation of Buddy Holly’s Crickets

Early career consisted of playing extended gigs in Hamburg, Germany. Cavern Club in Liverpool Met Brian Epstein Became their manager Cleaned up their look: haircuts, matching suits Got the group signed with Decca Records

Early influences on the music of the Beatles Elvis Presley Chuck Berry Little Richard Carl Perkins British success Initially resisted going to America

First major hit in the U.S. was “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” In the next three years: 30 hits in the top Number 1’s 1964 – first feature movie, A Hard Day’s Night 1965 – another movie, Help!
