You can expect to see regular changes in the garden, so that season by season and year by year there will be lots of new things to see! Organic Demonstration Area (Under Development) - This new display will become an introduction to the principles and practices of organic growing. It will include: Organic options available for soil improvement and a display of plant types suitable for different soils Organic approaches to pests and diseases A compost garden showcasing the different composting options suitable for different sized gardens A demonstration of green manures and organic plant foods such as comfrey Current Herb Garden (Under Development) - Contains over 200 plants with a variety of culinary and medicinal uses. Exotic Garden - This garden showcases multicultural food crops that can be grown in the UK. The 3 large beds represent 3 geographical growing regions; Afro-Caribbean, Indian and East Asian. The Alitex Glasshouse demonstrates the range of crops and ornamental plants that can be grown under glass in the UK. Heritage Seed Library Garden - This garden is maintained by the Heritage Seed Library who grow their heritage vegetables for seed saving. The collected seeds are then distributed to HSL members. Cut Flower Garden (Under Development) This garden, formally closed to the public is currently been used as a vegetable garden. The Anniversary Rose Garden - This area has re-opened for 2015 and is currently being managed by RHS Best in Horticulture. A B D J G H I F R Q Garden Organic is the working name of the Henry Doubleday Research Association, Registered charity number Individual Gardens O C E Wildflower Meadow & Fruitful Schools Orchard - This young orchard contains rare varieties of trees from Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and Worcestershire. Teachers will come to Ryton to learn how to plant, prune and bud apple stock from these trees. Apple Orchard - Different rootstocks are used here to give a display of tree size and suitability for different sized spaces. Memorial Garden - Dedicated to our founder Lawrence D. Hills and his wife Cherry. This is a sensory garden containing plants specifically selected for their aroma and textures built for people with visual impairment. Growth Therapy Garden - The horticultural therapy project has been running at Ryton Gardens for over 25 years and is responsible for maintaining this garden as well as the Memorial Garden. Cooks Garden - Some part of every plant in this garden is edible and is a good example of a small garden space which can be used to serve a kitchen such as the one in our onsite café, Fusca. Naturalistic Planting & Low Maintenance Landscape – This area demonstrates an alternative and imaginative approach to planting large spaces requiring minimum maintenance. Many of these plants (especially The seed heads) are great for insets and birds. The All Muck and Magic Garden - Originally made for Channel 4’s “All Muck and Magic” series. It shows how even a small space can incorporate many organic and sustainable methods such as crop rotation to be both productive and attractive. Keder Greenhouse - This All Weather Garden demonstrates the advantage of growing crops undercover and will eventually showcase a giant pumpkin! This greenhouse was kindly donated by CLM Greenhouses ( Paradise Garden - This garden is a memorial to Geoff Hamilton who believed everybody should have their own garden paradise. It is split into two gardens; Town & Country and includes a habitat zone which demonstrates how building animal shelters, such as the insect hotel can encourage beneficial insects into our own urban environments. Elysia Biodynamic Garden (Renewed for 2015) - This garden will be maintained by the Biodynamic Gardening Society and will showcase biodynamic gardening principles. The Allotment Garden (Under Development) - This garden displays all the principles of organic gardening with an emphasis on edibles, but with other features like ornamentals, cut-flowers and a pollinator friendly area. The main vegetable area is divided into 4 plots and is managed on a four-year crop rotation. National Heritage Vegetable Garden (Under Development) - Once completed this garden (formally the Bee Garden) will demonstrate a wide variety of heritage vegetables showcasing our Heritage Seed Library in full.
