Why Discuss Internships Now?  To help you become familiar with the process and terms  To help you review your preferences and options  To help us plan the 2 nd year of your program

Background: Core SLP Practica & Internship  A series of clinical assignments to develop –Clinical competencies –Independence in the full range of professional responsibilities for practice as an SLP

SPHSC Practica  Diagnostic and Treatment assignments  Locations on the UW Campus* –UW Speech & Hearing Clinic Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology Services –Center on Human Development & Disability (CHDD) *Note: Special Opportunities may also include –Experimental Education Unit (EEU) –UW Autism Center – Summer Camp Pilot

SPHSC Internship  Includes a “pre-internship” and “internship” –SPHSC 555 and SPHSC 601 or 602 registrations  The culmination of your Master’s program in Speech-Language Pathology –Usually during the last two quarters of your program –Completed at sites affiliated with the U.W. –Formal affiliation agreement to cover everyone  Learning under the direction of an ASHA certified SLP (CCC-SLP)

A Typical Plan:  Pre-Internship & Internship –Usually 1 quarter each, or may be combined into an extended quarter  Completed during the last two quarters of your program –1st quarter is called the Pre-internship –2 nd quarter is called the Internship  Your Tracking Plan indicates when you are scheduled to complete 555 and 601 or 602

More specifics on the Pre-Internship & Internship  Pre-internship –A period of orientation and initial clinical experience –Usually a range of 4-12 hours/week Typically.5 to 1.5 days/week for the quarter  Internship –Full-time placement = just like an “employee” –Usually 40 hours/week (five-8’s; four-10s…) –Could include weekends (unless personal conflict) All of this is arranged through the UW Fieldwork Coordinator

Some Questions  Can I get paid to do my Core internships? –Typically, no –Some school sites have offered a stipend  Can I set up my own affiliation? –No, we have over 250 affiliations so you have an amazing array of options  Can I secure my choice now? –This is the time to review and identify preferences –If more than 1 student has their heart set on “a site,” we typically arrange for those students to interview  Do the Med SLP students get the best medical sites? –From our perspective, each site is open to both degree programs –Sites may indicate a preference
