Presentation on the safe use of ladders and stepladders based on new advice from the Health and Safety Executive
Safe use of ladders
Consider whether a safer means of access could be used
Use of ladders Short duration - up to 30 minutes Light work - up to 10kg
Use on firm level surfaces
Base of ladders secured with footing device
Have a strong upper resting point (not gutters, glazing etc) A stand off device may be required
Ladders must be at the correct angle 1in 4 (75 degress)
When using a ladder for access to another level, the ladder must extend ladder at least 1 metre above the landing point.
Using ladders on sloping surfaces 16˚ 6˚ Rungs must be levelled with a suitable device.
Good practice – maintain 3 points of contact
Bad practice – 3 points of contact not maintained
Bad practice – overreaching, not 3 points of contact Belt buckle should be within stiles
Safe use of stepladders
Consider whether a safer means of access could be used
Use of stepladders Short duration - up to 30 minutes Light work - up to 10kg
Use on firm level surfaces
Only use stepladders in the fully opened position. Do not climb a stepladder which is closed (i.e. like a ladder) Stepladders are not suitable for access to another level.
When working on soft ground use a board to improve stability
Good practice – steps facing work activity
Bad practice – steps side on to activity
Good practice – top 3 steps clear
Bad practice – working on top, no handrail
Pre-use inspection of ladders and stepladders
Ladders & stepladders must have a current inspection tag Equipment belonging to other depts must not be used!
Missing feet – ladder/stepladder will wobble
Bent or twisted rungs and dented stiles
Loose connections
Damaged bar on stepladder
Remember: Always consider whether a safer means of access could be used.
