Pro Active Health We have a strong focus on pro active healthcare. What this means is that we have developed programs that focus on the early diagnosis and management of chronic conditions to improve the quality of life for the people affected by it. If you know that you have a chronic condition and you are not yet on a management plan, speak to your doctor about the benefits that a management plan may have for you.

Pro Active Health Programs  Diabetes Management  Asthma Management  Health Assessments  Various Heart Disease  Ischemic Heart Disease  Coronary Heart disease  Arthritis Management  Skin Checks Hypertension  Osteoporosis  Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)  Delayed development in children  Childhood immunisations

Healthy Kids Checks- 4 year olds If your child has had their third birthday and has not yet turned five, you may wish to arrange for them to have a Healthy Kids Check provided by our practice nurse. A Healthy Kids Check is available to all children at or around the time of their 4 year old immunisation and helps to ensure that children are healthy, fit and ready to learn when they start school.

Healthy Kids Checks- 4 year olds The aim of the Healthy Kids Check is to improve the health and well-being of Australian children and promote early detection of lifestyle risk factors, delayed development and illness. It also provides the opportunity to discuss with your family doctor or practice nurse guidance on healthy lifestyles and early intervention strategies for your child. A Healthy Kids Check will include an assessment of your child’s height and weight, an assessment f their eyesight, hearing and oral health and discussion about their toilet habits and known or suspected allergies. If you would like your child to receive a free Healthy Kids Check you can speak to one of our friendly receptionists to arrange an appointment.

A SIMPLE CHECK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Skin Cancer Awareness

Sl ap on a hat Slap on a hat that provides as much shade as possible to your face, head, neck, ears and eyes. There are three main styles of hats that provide adequate sun protection: Broad brimmed hats - with a brim of at least 7.5cm. Bucket or 'surfie' style hats - with a deep crown and brim of at least 6cm. Legionnaire hats - with a flap that covers the back of the neck. Baseball caps and visors are not recommended as they leave the ears and the back of the neck exposed.

What is a solarium? A solarium may also be known as a sunbed, sun tanning unit, sunlamp, tanning bed, or tanning booth. It is a device that uses electricity to produce concentrated ultraviolet (UV) radiation to tan the skin. Tanning happens more rapidly from a solarium compared to sun tanning because of the high intensity of the UV radiation emitted. What is ultraviolet (UV) radiation? UV radiation is the part of sunlight that is responsible for sunburn, skin cancer, eye damage, ageing and wrinkling of the skin. A solarium can produce concentrations of UV radiation that are up to five times the strength of the summer sun at noon. The two main types of UV radiation emitted by a solarium are UVA and UVB. UVA radiation may cause premature ageing of the skin, wrinkles, blotchiness, unusual pigmentation, skin cancer and eye damage. UVB radiation may cause sunburn, skin ageing, skin cancers and eye damage.

Is it safe to use a solarium? No solarium can provide a safe tan. Exposing your skin to UV radiation produced by a solarium increases your risk of developing skin cancer, eye cancers and other skin and eye damage. People who had ever used solariums had a 15% increased risk of developing malignant melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer); People who first used solariums in their teens or twenties had a 75% increased risk of developing melanoma; and People who had ever used solariums have an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma (another form of skin cancer). If you are determined to change the colour of your skin, fake tan is the best option. However, remember that no tan provides adequate protection from the sun.

. BE SUNSMART FAST FACTS 1 in 2 Australians get some kind of skin cancer You can get sunburnt in as little as 10 minutes Too much UV radiation also makes you look old before your time - making your skin look saggy, wrinkly and leathery There are three main types of skin cancer. Melanoma is the most dangerous it grows quickly and can be deadly. Every day, three Australians die from Melanoma Everyone living in Australia is at risk of getting skin cancer because we have very high levels of UV radiation The good news is that skin cancer is almost totally preventable

There’s nothing healthy about a tan

. There’s more to sun protection than sunscreen Protect yourself in five ways: Slip on sun protective clothing Slop on SPF30+ sunscreen Slap on a broad-brimmed hat Seek shade Slide on wrap-around sunglasses

Good Sun Protection

Be Sun Smart, Don’t Cook for Looks

Slop on SPF 30 + Sunscreen Make sure your sunscreen is broad spectrum and water-resistant. Sunscreen should not be used to increase the amount of time you spend in the sun and should always be used with other forms of protection. Apply sunscreen liberally to clean, dry skin at least 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
