What’s Happening in Class ! No Signet this Week! Language Arts ( Fuller)- Our Compare and Contrast Unit is going really well so far!! Students seem to have a solid foundation in this concept. Our Unit Test is next Thursday, January 22nd. To prepare it would be helpful to review notes, look over practices and focus on key terms for Compare and Contrast. No Vocabulary next week due to the shorter week. The final day for the six books to be read for their Passport is January 22nd. If you need some extra practice try the IXL Reading lessons below (or any of the Reading ones really!) NN1-NN5, OO1-OO3, DD1, FF1, EE1-EE3, QQ1-QQ3. Math (Young) –In the next two week, we will be focusing on capacity, temperature, elapsed time, and metric conversions. Our test will be on January 30 th, and it will cover all of these things in addition to length and weight of both customary and metric measures. Please remember to keep practicing on IXL at home. Some great lessons for practice are under 4 th grade N1, N2, and N8 as well as 5 th grade W1 and W7. Have a wonderful long weekend! Science (Rodgers) - We are traveling down the exciting road of the Scientific process! The students have completed a class project, labs and other activities related to the scientific method or process. At this point, each child should be working on an independent projedt at home. Each student has a lab notebook to record each step of the project into. The students should try to do the experiment at least three times if possible. This will ensure that the data is reliable. The project is due on Feruary 2nd. Social Studies (Rodgers). We are comparing and contrasting the different southwest states - ladndforms, climates and cultures. We also wrote about our dream for the world that we live in. We will have our test on the Southwest on Thursday. The students have the study guide in their binders. They could play Sheppard software at home to help with Social Studes. It has other subjects as well. Quick Reminders Please check your student’s agenda daily. A signature from you will communicate that you were able to see assignments and upcoming quizzes/tests. (Not required!) Attendance hotline number: Keep up to date on the latest goings on at school by viewing the Ashland Announcer and Falcon Flyers on the school website. Want extra practice for Language Arts or Math? IXL is now avaliable for both subjects. Mrs. Fuller and Mrs. Yoiung's Fusion pages both have great links for practice as well! School News The first generation MyPWCS mobile app is now available to download free from the iTunes App store (for Apple products) or Android’s Play Store. Search for "PWCS, MyPWCS Blackboard." Parents, students, and staff can follow one or more schools, plus the School Division for quick access to information and links to resources such as the Parent Portal. Birthday cookies (peanut free) can be purchased through Mrs. Schrader in the cafeteria. Call her at to make arrangements. Cookies cost $3.70 per dozen. ***Please use the link on Ashland’s home page to register for Parent Portal if you have not done so already. This will also link you to our classroom webpage. This will enable you to check your student’s grades from home. It will also add you to our Fusion Pages. Your student can long onto Fusion from the Ashland homepage using their student number as their username and their birthday with only numbers as their password....example October 3, 2001 would be PWCPS (Like us on Facebook) PWCPS Important Dates 1/19 No School Martin Luther King Day 1/22 Reading Unit 5 Test Compare and Contrast & 6 Books due in Reading Passport Document Southwest Unit Tes No Vocabulary this week! No Signet this week! 1/23 End of 2nd Quarter Early dismissal for Conferences 1/26 Teacher Workday No School for Students 1/30 Measurement Part 2 Unit Test 2/2/2015 Red Team Science projects due Science Skills test Classroom News Specials Days (1/20-1/23)– This week’s specials days are: Tues: Day 4, Wed: Day 5 Thurs: Day 6, Fri: Day 1(See student agenda’s for rotation schedules or check our Fusion pages.) Ms. Hem would like us to let you know that on days when we have two hour delays, there will be no strings. A note from Mrs. Heim: Congratulations to 4th and 5th grade strings students for a wonderful winter concert! Students have already been given new music to begin practicing for our Pyramid Concert which will be held at Benton M.S. at the end of March. 4th grade perform on March 24th and 5th grade will perform on March 26th. Just like 20 minutes of daily reading is important, so is practice! Music is a lot like a foreign language. Keep encouraging your child to practice for minutes at least 4-5 days a week. Your child will feel more confident and will ultimately find new music easier to read, understand, and play. At this time of year it is a good idea to think about the effects of winter weather on the instruments. Instruments and people like to be the same temperature. Please be careful not to leave instruments in the car or too close the heater as they may become cracked and damaged. Also, during the winter sometimes instruments go out of tune frequently due to the changes in temperature between outside and inside. Please remind your child not to turn the pegs on the instrument as strings break very easily. Bring the instrument to school and I will tune it for them. Red Team Weekly Newsletter January 16 th &
