The HEART of NSBE Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) NSBEprenuer TM Technical Outreach and Community Help (TORCH) Retention Program Signature Programs

The HEART of NSBE The SIGs NSBE AE SIGs are signature programs in NSBE chartered to link NSBE with technology and to promote technical excellence among NSBE professional members. The goal of each SIG is to advance the state of science, technology, and engineering  Information Technology Think Tank (ITTT)  Space  Women in Science and Engineering  Public Policy  Process Improvement  Environmental  Energy Signature Programs

The HEART of NSBE Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Is to increase elementary school students’ aptitude in math and science and their interest in pursuing STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) career fields, by having them engage in interactive, team-based engineering projects. A free three-week program targeting students in grades 3-5. APPLY TO BE A SEEK MENTOR FOR NEXT SUMMER!!! Applications open at the beginning of October! Signature Programs

The HEART of NSBE NSBEprenuer Training Institute- The primary focus is on creating technical companies through offering training for current and prospective business owners. Elevator Pitch and Business Plan Competitions- Gives members the opportunity to present a Business Plan to panels of experts who can offer feedback and guidance. Signature Programs

The HEART of NSBE TORCH STEM Community Training- Formal classroom style education in STEM fields aimed at both youth and adults. Informal Science and Engineering Education- Casual outreach activities, targeted at youth, which aim to show how science and engineering can be fun. A Walk for Education- A single day outreach activity aimed at encouraging youth to be better prepared for higher educational opportunities in STEM fields, and in general. Technical Expertise Services- Using our technical skills to provide a direct service to the community. Traditional Community Service Activities- Any other type of community service: food or clothing drives, volunteering at a shelter, etc. Signature Programs

The HEART of NSBE Retention Program To improve the graduation rates of Blacks in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This will be the umbrella for three different programmatic pieces designed for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. – Freshmen- successfully matriculate into a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) major for their sophomore year. – Sophomores- interaction with faculty and staff, personal development and leadership opportunities, and career path development. – Juniors- preparation for graduate school admissions and/or entry into the engineering industry, increased performance on the GRE, and opportunities for volunteer, educational, and paid experiences in engineering. The HEART of NSBE Retention Program Find students (focus on freshmen) Engage professors to create faculty buy-in Create test/homework bank Reserve rooms for study sessions Emphasize a collaborative learning and community For schools with existing or similar programs, take additional steps to help with retention Signature Programs

Direction of Programs National Directives – Academic Excellence – Pipeline Development Increase the quantity and quality of Retention Programs Ensure that all NSBE programs, activities, competitions are aligned with the mission Enforce metrics and data collection of all NSBE programs

Direction of Programs Regional Directives – Membership Enhancement – Leadership Development Utilize the ICD to measure the development and progress of chapters Collaborative programming between Collegiate, PCI, and Alumni Build model leaders from the “Model” Region

Direction of Programs Region 2 Goals Evaluate the effectiveness of programs Improve effectiveness of programs through collaborative chapter programming/events (PCI and Alumni included) 5 Collegiate-Collegiate events in each zone per semester 3 Collegiate-NSBE Jr. events in each zone per semester 2 Collegiate-Alumni events in each zone per semester Increase TORCH community service activities throughout the region 3 events pertaining to at least one of the T.O.R.C.H. components in each zone per semester Increase awareness and participation in Business Diversity programs Increase participation by 50% Increase the number of Retention Programs Goal of 20 chapters!

Roles & Responsibilities As a Programs Zone Leader Provide a vision and direction for the zone Delegate responsibilities and manage tasks Serve as liaison for the Programs Zone on the Administrative Zone

Roles & Responsibilities Academic Excellence Chair – Academic Support for board and membership – Verify GPAs – Promoting Scholarships – Retention Program PCI Chair – Working with NSBE Jr. Chapters – Set up High School visits and outreach – Develop ideas and Programs to increase pre college interest in STEM TORCH/ Community Service Chair – Promote and plan community service activities – Implement components of TORCH programs – Work with other organizations and community leaders Roles of your Zone…

Roles & Responsibilities As a Regional Programs Committee Member Inform regional programs of member needs and desires ATTEND CONFERENCE CALLS! Next call is Wednesday, September 28 th at 9pm EST. Report monthly activities due 1 st of each month –A part of criteria for Chapter excellence Awards Assist in evaluating and support Regional Programs

Expectations Effectively Budget for programs –Collaborate with Finance Zone to seek corporate funding –Plan well ahead of time and know your budget –Utilize the National Program Fund (NPF) for new programs Develop the purpose Develop the objective Identify the resources

Document EVERYTHING!!! Utilize you board It takes EVERYONE in NSBE leadership (National - Regional – Chapter) leadership for a program and its components to be successful. You are an advocate to other Zone leaders about ALL things within your Zone. You MUST be the resident expert when it comes to your chapter and its programs. You have to be able to EFFECTIVELY communicate your Zone needs to other Zones so energy and time aren’t wasted Support Regional and National Programs by ACTIVELY serving on committees
