Hope for Families – Part 1 Jesus Cancels the Family Curse Matthew 1:1-17

A record of the genealogy of Jesus. (1:1) Matthew – the first book of the New Testament, was written to tell us about the historical Jesus. The story of Jesus is not a myth.

Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV) Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

The List… It is a record of God keeping His word and it is a record of God including people outside the margins and it all centers on Jesus.

God Keeps His Word – (vv.1, 17) A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham: (1:1) Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. (1:17)

God Keeps His Word – (vv.1, 17) Jesus Christ = Messiah –"Christ" means anointed –Jesus, the proper name of the Messiah means saves.

God Keeps His Word – (vv.1, 17) Son of David = future hope. 2 Samuel: 7:12-13,16; Isaiah: 11:1; Jeremiah: 23:5-6; Zechariah: 3:8; Ezekiel: 37:24; Amos: 9:11-12; Psalms 89: 4-5, 36-37; 132:11

God Keeps His Word – (vv.1, 17) Son of Abraham = God keeps his covenant. –“all the nations of the earth will be blessed” (Gen 12:1-3).

God includes people outside the margins Tamar: People who were abused and unwanted (Genesis 38) Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, (1:3)

God includes people outside the margins Ruth: People who need God’s great kindness. (Ruth)

God includes people outside the margins Asa: People who need to restart after a good start. (2 Chronicles 14-16) –Asa was a good king who “did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.” (2 Chron. 14:2) –“his heart was fully committed to the LORD all his life.” (2 Chron. 15:17)

Bottom Line: This list of names is centered on Jesus “She will give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save His people from their sins.” (1:21)

Bottom Line: This list of names is centered on Jesus The good news of the Bible is not how good and great people are, but how gracious and merciful God is in spite of our sin and rebellion and depravity.
