Types of Engineers “Civil engineers” do the design work of large construction like bridges, dams, etc. They make an average of $78,000 a year. “Construction engineers” can do the design work or the actual construction involved in building large or small structures. Average salary = $79,000/year. “Architectural engineers” focus on the interior and exterior of a residential or commercial building. Average salary = $67,000/year. “Construction workers.” The laborers who do the actual construction. Not engineers. Average salary = $44,000/year.
