How to Complete a Competency Report Webinar

What is Competency? Competency is a combination of knowledge and skills underlying safe and competent performance in a discipline of practice. ASET uses competency-based assessment to evaluate both your theoretical and practical knowledge as a technician or technologist. TheoreticalPractical

What is a Competency Report? An assessment tool used by the ASET Board of Examiners when evaluating your application Provide point-form examples of the workplace application of key competencies in your discipline of practice A discipline-specific competency profile is provided to assist with preparing your report

Completing Your Competency Report Download the Competency Report in your discipline or the General Report if your discipline is not listed – Become a Member  Requirements and Applications  C.Tech. or C.E.T.

Completing Your Competency Report Or download via the Application Portal

Completing Your Competency Report Review the competency profile included as Appendix A – Includes role descriptions for technicians and technologists – Outlines six key competencies: Technical Analysis, Technical Implementation/Design, Technical Evaluation, Project Management, Professional Accountability, and Communication – Each competency includes competency indicators, which outline the knowledge and performance expectations for entry-level professionals in the discipline

Completing Your Competency Report Provide workplace examples for each of the key competencies – You must provide examples for each competency – do not leave a competency section blank – Summarize your experience, knowledge and/or skills as a technician or technologist in relation to specific work projects, tasks, or situations – Point form responses are acceptable but include enough information for assessors to evaluate your report – Although you may not have experience related to every competency indicator, try to reference as many indicators as possible via your examples

Completing Your Competency Report Have your report validated by a reference with direct knowledge of your work Sign, date, and upload your report via the Application Portal

How is Your Report Assessed? Report assessed by discipline-specific subject matter experts Two assessors assigned to each applicant file to ensure an objective and equitable review process Assessors evaluate your examples to determine if you have met the minimum competency requirements for certification – C.Tech.: Must meet at least 5 competencies + technician-specific indicators – C.E.T.: Must meet at least 5 competencies + technologist-specific indicators

How is Your Report Assessed? When reviewing an applicant’s Competency Report, the assessor will be determining whether you have : – Exhibited knowledge and skills appropriate to your discipline as outlined in the relevant competency profile; – Met the minimum competency requirements for certification; AND – Demonstrated a commitment to professional accountability If the assessor needs more information, you may be requested to add detail to your report or to provide additional documentation
