Comparaciones Sra. Altamirano Español II Memorial High School

Let’s review Spanish I In Spanish I, we learned how to compare things that were different using the following forms: 1. Mas que/ menos que More than/less than Yo como más que tú I eat more than you

Tú comes menos que yo You eat less than I 2. Mayor que/menor que Older than/younger than Mi papá es mayor que yo My dad is older than I Mi hermanito es menor que yo My little brother is younger than I

3. Mejor que/ peor que Better than/ worst than Shakira canta mejor que tú Shakira sings better than you. Burger king es peor que Mc Donalds Burger king is worst than McDonalds

Now, let’s move on to Spanish II Now, we are going to learn another way to make comparisons. These forms are usually used when we are comparing things that are equal to one another. These forms will need to be memorized as you cannot switch the word order.

1.Tan+ adjective+ como (adverb) Ex: Yo soy tan inteligente como tú I am as smart as you as

Tanto + noun+ como tanta tantas tantos Ex: yo tengo tantos libros como tú I have as many books as you As many as much as Notice that tanto agrees with the noun

La orquesta toca tanta música como la banda The Orchetra plays as much music as the band. Has to agree

Although this form of comparisons is used to compare things that are equal to one another, we can also use them to compare things that are different just by adding NO before the verb. Ex: La natación no es tan pupular como las artes marciales. Swimming is not as popular as martial arts.

Vamos a practicar! Remember we are going to write complete sentences, so we need to have: S ubject + V erb+ P redicate Tanto+ noun+como Tan+ adjective+ como

Compare the following activities using the clues provided La natación/ser popular/el hockey La natación es tan popular como el hockey. subject verb predicate Subject # 2 Polular is an adjective, so, I must use tan

Notes Steps to do well in this topic: 1.Memorize the two forms a) Tan+ adjective+como b) Tanto+noun+como (remember, tanto has to agree with the noun in gender and #) 2. Write a complete sentence S+V+P 3. Decide if you are comparing using an adjective or a noun.

Notes Remember an adjective is a word that helps you describe a noun. For example: Bonito, feo, grande, pequeño, alto, bajo, interesante, aburrido and…all those adjectives we learned in spanish I and reviewed during the first six weeks of Spanish II
