This illustrates the “particles” in each of the following:

Mixtures A. Combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined and they are not in specific ratios. Ex: Cheese and tomato sauce on pizza = mixture.

The Liberty Bell is a mixture of 70% copper, 25 % tin, and small amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, gold, and silver.

Mixtures B. Substances within a mixture retain their properties because it is not a chemical reaction! Colorless quartz, pink feldspar, & black mica make up the mixture of granite.

Mixtures C. Mixtures can be separated by physical means. Ex: filtering, picking out, magnet

Mixtures D. Not all mixtures are easy to separate. Ex: Salt water: heating, distillation

Distillation:Used to get a pure liquid from a solution.

Density is also used to separate cranberries. Ripe cranberries float in water, but unripe cranberries sink. During harvest, cranberry bogs are flooded, and floating cranberries are skimmed from the water! Density can be used for separating.

A mixture of the compound sodium chloride with the element sulfur requires more than one step to separate.

1. Pure elements 2. Elements made of SINGLE ATOMS 3. An element made of MOLECULES 4. Mixture of TWO elements 5. Mixture of THREE elements 6. Pure compounds 7. Mixture of TWO compounds 8. Diatomic element and single atom element. Match the diagram to the phrase below:

Mixtures HW: Read 62-64; page 64 questions in sentence answers. Activity: Separate salt from iron
