S ELF A WARENESS AND C AREER D EVELOPMENT Week 9 and final for this semester!

S TARTER Those who haven’t yet had a go pick a question, say how you would answer it and we’ll see what the Brookes Career website suggests mulator.aspx

B IG PICTURE ‘Apply’ for a position on any of the Lloyds Banking Group Graduate Programmes Complete the dummy application form, produce an up to date tailor-made CV and letter of application by Thursday 19 th November You will be interviewed and provided with feedback on either Thursday 26 th November, Thursday 3 rd or Thursday 10 th December You will need to evaluate your performance and produce an action plan based on it following your interview feedback (due in 2 weeks after the assessment date and is the basis of the marks)

L EARNING OUTCOMES Consider the best body language for interviews Discuss what psychological preparation you can do for interviews Identify good questions to ask at interviews Evaluate how to handle offers and negotiate Review company research preparation and general interview preparation Evaluate an assignment exemplar

B ODY LANGUAGE FOR INTERVIEWS On your table discuss what your body language is most suitable for an interview Body language gets the job:

P SYCHOLOGICAL PREPARATION FOR INTERVIEWS Visualisation – visualise yourself being successful...start by imaging yourself walking confidently into the room, being greeted, answering questions confidently and clearly and coming out feeling positive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy – Beck 1960s noticed that people have an internal dialogue that they ‘talk’ to themselves of which they are not always aware if the voice is negative eg ‘why are you going for that job you’ll never get it’ it needs to be changed!

G OOD QUESTIONS TO ASK AT INTERVIEW Asking good questions shows your interest and gives you the opportunity to find out if you would want to accept the role should it be offered (interviews are a 2 way process!) What are some questions that you have/would ask at interview?

C OMPANY RESEARCH AND INTERVIEW PREPARATION CHECKLIST Using the company research template and use the internet to fill in as much as you can now Then look at the interview preparation checklist and fill in as much as possible (on Moodle) (NB should you wish to refer to them in your reflection they are both resources from the Brookes Careers website) 20 minutes:

H OW TO ACCEPT JOB OFFERS / HANDLE REJECTION If you want the job make it clear you are very happy to be offered it But this is your main chance to negotiate if there are any terms you are not happy with (use ODE) If you didn’t get the job make sure that you find out why Pick yourself up and realise you are playing a numbers game...may be it wasn’t the perfect job for your after all or not yet at least

W RITTEN A SSIGNMENT B RIEF You must participate in a mock recruitment process exercise for a nominated graduate position. This will include updating and tailoring a CV, writing a letter of application, application form, participating in a simulated interview and producing a reflective statement with action plan. Firstly, review the selected graduate recruitment programme. Identify and research the chosen position in detail and be prepared to ‘apply’ for the post. You will need to complete an application form, produce an up to date tailor-made CV and letter of application. A simulated individual interview for the position will take place before an interview panel. At the end, a decision on the successful candidate will be made, with feedback given to each candidate individually. The written element requires you to reflect on your performance at interview, considering what went well and what did not go well and why this might have been. You should consider any feedback given as to how well you demonstrated your transferable skills and if there was a deficit, consider better examples of competencies that you could have given. You should include an action plan on how you will approach job applications and interviews in the future. Your mark will be based on BOTH your performance at interview AND on your reflection and action plan. The weighting breakdown between interview and reflection are: 40% on the interview and 60% on the reflection. Word count: 1000 words.
