The Limbic System

Location of the limbic system central underside of the cerebrum it covers the inner sections of the temporal lobes and the bottom of the frontal lobes

Thalamus Size: largest of the sections of the limbic system Location : the midline near the centre of the brain Shape: two walnut shaped parts Abnormalities:

Hypothalamus Size: weighs about 4 grams Location : both sides of the third ventricle just below the thalamus. Shape: small cone shaped ending near the pituitary gland

Hippocampus Size: About the same size and weight as the hypothalamus Location : Deep in the temporal lobe Structure: Shape: sea horse shaped curving back from the amygdala are the two horns

Amygdala Size: Smallest of the four Location : left and right side of the temporal lobes Shape: Almond shaped

Function of the Limbic System Thalamus Hypothalamus Hippocampus Amygdala

Impairments Chemical Exposure Virus or Infection Inflammation Psychological and/or Emotional Trauma Accumulated Stress Physical Trauma

Illnesses and disorders Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Anxiety Depression Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Alzheimer’s disease: Difficulty in forming new memories and information Parkinson’s Disease Schizophrenia Dementia

Early limbic system Powerful emotions like surprise and disgust Less powerful emotions joy and love Flight or fight
