Academic Objectives  Three hour upper division Geology elective – ‘Geology of Italy’  20 Students  Each student will:  Give a presentation on one of the stops  Participate in field debates  Keep a journal of their experiences and observations  Contribute to a class blog  Measure sections and interpret the origins of the rocks in:  Turbidites in the Apennines  Carbonates in the Dolomites  Complete a take home final at the end of the trip

Rome (2.5 Days)  Origin of the architectural materials  Cultural Immersion:  Coliseum  Trevi fountain  Vatican / Sistine Chapel

Ostia (1 Day)  Ancient port city of Rome  Built at mouth of Tiber River; buried by avulsion

Sorrento (2 Days)  Pompeii  Herculaneum  Geologic hazards

Vesuvius (0.5 Day)  Hike to crater  Subduction related stratovolcano

Arezzo (3 Days)  Lectures at OU campus  Student presentations  Visit winery  Relating geology and modern wine through soil type

Apennines  Two day trips from Arezzo  Turbidites  Some of Mutti’s classic locations  Reservoir characterization

Florence  One day trip from Arezzo  Leonardo Da Vinci Museum  Academia Gallery  Cultural immersion

Venice (1.5 Days)  Subsidence issues  Boat trip to the Lido (barrier island)  Gates and Venice lagoon

Dolomites (2 Days)  “The Latemar buildup is an ideal case study because of its preservation as limestone, relatively small size, the lack of structural complexity, and spectacular exposure.”-Robert K. Goldhammer  Measure sections

Detailed Itinerary July 6: Arrive in Rome, light day visiting sites. July 7: Day 2- Ancient Rome, Rome Coliseum –Forum (Half day guide). Welcome dinner. July 8: - PM Vatican (Half day guide). We will spend some time looking at the marble floors in St. Peters (subduction zone marble). July 9: Go from Roma to Ostia Antica (old port city of Roma that was buried by river mud). There is a display on where marble came from at the site. Go to Sorrento by private bus. July 10: Sorrento to Pompeii by train and then Herculaneum by bus and back to Sorrento. July 11: Sorrento to Vesuvius (visit the Park) and Arezzo by private bus. July 12: Arezzo to Apennines, day trip by private bus. Examine turbidites facies. I have a field guide which focuses on reservoir characterization of the turbidites. July 13: Apennines, day trip by private bus. Examine turbidites facies.

Detailed Itinerary Cont. July 14: Arezzo. Light day. Walking tour of Arezzo, perhaps an hour to two of lecturing, and a visit to a winery in the afternoon. July 15: Arrezo –Florence. Day trip by train. Visit Accademia (Half day guide) and perhaps the Michael Angelo Museum. July 16: Go to Venice by train. Walking tour. No guide. July 17: Venice: Lido + Mose (Gates) July 18: Venice to Dolomites by Private bus. July 19: Hike up the Latemar and look at rocks. July 20: Bus to Milan. July 21: Fly home from Milan.
