Developing Extra Care Housing  Why extra care housing?  What is it?  Case Study : Oak Court – Blaby Need Partners Funding Design and Development Care and Support

Extra Care Housing – Why?  UK population set to reach 73m by 2037 from 63m in  By 2035 it is projected that those aged 65 and over will account for 23 per cent of the total population.  Number of people over 80 set to more than double from 3m in 2012 to 6.1m in  Proportion of people over 75 will grow from 7.9% in 2012 to 13% in  31% growth in numbers of people of state pension age – 16.1m by  National policy – social care and health needs of older people to support independence, good health and well being.  One strand is to support preventative services and accommodation to support independence.  Extra care housing model and housing related support – one option.

Extra Care Housing – Why?  Joint Strategic Needs Assessment ( 2012) for Leicestershire – Number of people over 75 and to increase.  Leicestershire Extra Care Housing Strategy for Older People looked at modernisation of residential care and housing support services in the County.  Strategy recommended development of 500 units extra care across the County by  Scheme at Oak Court, Blaby direct response to this need.  Blaby – one existing extra care scheme.

Extra Care Housing – What is it?  Specialist housing with care and support for older people.  Self contained accommodation together with 24 hour care, support and communal facilities including meal provision.

Extra Care Housing – What is it?  Accommodation which promotes independence. Individual tenancy and own front door with philosophy of resident involvement.  Care and Support tailored to meet individual changing needs. A holistic service.  Building design allows for a flexible and adaptable service.

Oak Court,Blaby – Care and Support  Care and Support delivered by one provider with Scheme Manager and team of care and support staff on site  Allocations Protocol and Lettings criteria via panel process  Assessment based on individual needs and promoting independence  Communal facilities such as hairdressers and shop managed by local provider.  External caterers providing main meal and snacks.  Links with the community via the local college, and partner providers such as Age UK.  Pilot reablement project in 5 flats working closely with adult social care and health colleagues to enable people to be supported moving out from hospital into an extra care setting.
