La Entrada Goes 1:1 with Wi-Fi

Technology that allows an electronic device to share data using electromagnetic radiation (EMR) waves over a computer network AKA: Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Wi-Fi products are based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' (IEEE) x standards

EMR is a form of energy (photon packets) emitted by both an electric and magnetic field

The Big Bang  Stars (e.g. the Sun) When an atom absorbs energy the absorbed energy causes one or more electrons to change their location next to an atom’s nucleus. When the electron returns to its original position, an EMR wave is produced and travels to Earth

Terms: Crest – top of a wave Trough – bottom of a wave Amplitude – Height of a wave Wavelength – length of a wave Frequency – wave cycles over time Hertz (Hz) – 1 wave cycle per second

There are several different types of EMR waves based on the length of each wave cycle Some are miles long while others are microscopically small All EMR waves travel the speed of light and follow this formula: Wavelength x Frequency = Speed of Light

Wi-Fi uses has a certain wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum: Wi-Fi uses really small radio waves called “microwaves” Other microwave devices: Microwaves, Radars, Cell Phones

It converts computer data which is composed of 0s and 1s (binary) to radio waves Wi-Fi routers (Access Points) convert the electric signal of computer data to electromagnetic waves When the electromagnetic waves reach your computer, they are converted to electrical 0s and 1s The higher the frequency, the more data that can be transferred (2.4GHz<5.0GHz)

2.4 GHz – 13 channels 3.6 GHz – 8 channels 4.9 GHz - 7 channels 5.0 GHz – 24 channels Follow special rules or standards set by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) –Wi-Fi Rules #  ieee x

In frequency (GHz), Data rate (Mbps) and when developed: b – 2.4GHz, 11Mbps, a - 5 GHz, 54 Mbps, g – 2.4GHz, 54 Mbps, n – 2.4 & 5 GHz (Dual-band), up to 600 Mbps, ac – 5 GHz, up to 1.3 Gbps, 2013

Access Point (AP) – What broadcasts the internet to Wi-Fi devices--aka Wireless router Ad Hoc mode – Wi-Fi between two or more computers Hotspot – 1 or more APs in a particular location (e.g. Starbucks, library, etc.) Repeater – Increases the strength of a Wi- Fi signal

A method for hiding information such that only the sender and the intended recipient can read it. Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and WiFi Protected Access (WPA) are types of encryption methods used by Wi-Fi networks. We use WPA2.
