Honus & Me by Dan Gutman Film Pitch By Kirk

About the Author Dan Gutman has written over 100 books- mostly children's fiction Notable books: – Baseball Card Adventure Series – Weird School Series

Plot Summary: Exhibition Protagonist Joe Stoshack (Thomas Horn) – Poor baseball player loses a game – Sent by mom (Julia Roberts) to clean old lady neighbor Amanda Young’s attic (Betty White)

Plot Summary: Inciting Incident – Joe finds old Honus Wagner baseball card and takes it to a lying card-shop owner Birdie Farrell (Thomas F. Wilson) – Dad tells him to research card’s value – Joe and discovers card is both expensive and magical

Plot Summary: Rising Action Honus Wagner (Tobey Maguire) is at Joe’s next game. Joe fails again. Try to use the card to send Honus back in time, but both go. Joe ages and looks just like Honus Honus teaches Joe about baseball Joe discovers Honus’s long- lost girlfriend was Amanda Young (Scarlett Johannsen)

Plot Summary: Climax Joe helps Honus beat Ty Cobb in the 1909 World Series. – Took Honus’s place at the game’s critical moment

Plot Summary: Falling Action Joe finds another Honus Wagner card and gets back home Birdies tries to steal the card, but Amanda saves him Joe gives the card to Amanda Young

Plot Summary: Resolution Joe remember what Honus taught him and wins the next game.

Plot Changes Climax – Have Amanda go back in time – After the game ends, have Joe get a certified package with 10 Honus Wagner baseball cards, plus cards from the entire Pirates team.

Character Changes Eliminate the dad character from this story – Joe would have already have known that the card was rare. Mom works double shift – Avoids conflict of seeing Honus – Emphasizes financial difficulties

Setting Changes Reflect 2014 instead of – Internet – Smart phone

Theme: No Changes “The secret to bein’ a great ballplayer-” He looked around the room as if he didn’t want anyone else to hear, “is to trick yourself into thinkin’ you already one.” Honus Wagner (41) The theme of the story is focused on gaining self esteem and figuring out how great of a person you can become. In this case, Joe learns that he is not a terrible baseball player. He is just misguided in how he hits and fields the ball and Honus helps him perfect those areas.

Imagery “The background of the card was burnt-orange. There was a thin white border on all four sides. Across the bottom border, centered in the middle, were these magic words…” WAGNER, PITTSBURG (17) This description of the card shows that anybody goes crazy over rare and expensive items in this world, and when humans lust for more, they use force to try and get, just like how Birdie tried to take the card from Joe. Also, the future would have brighter lighting to represent how technology has brought about a better age. But when Joe travels back to the past, it will be shot in a darker lighting to represent the “dark age” of technology.

Symbolism The T-206 Honus Wagner Card would be the main symbol – It would be featured and shown in most shots

Rationale This film will show that greed can easily be driven out in full force when money is easily obtainable. This film will also show that with the right teaching and training, a person can perform to the best of their abilities if not greater.
