NHSL Family Nurse Partnership, North Lanarkshire’s Working and Community Learning and Development Improving the employability prospects of Family Nurse Partnership clients and their partners within North Lanarkshire

Context  Family Nurse Partnership works with first time mothers under the age of 20 to : Have a healthy pregnancy Improve their child’s health and development Plan their own futures and achieve their aspirations  The work undertaken by family nurses highlighted that the clients were feeling unable to access the services already offered in their areas.

Changes/Improvements  The change we are currently testing is to facilitate a bespoke course to support young parents into education, training or work. The involvement of the family nurse in the development of the course and by being a link between the course and the client we believe will support engagement with the course.

Data! Data! Data!  The measures being used to collect both qualitative and quantative data include: -  Attendance each day of the course  Participant confidence levels pre and post course.  Number of participants enrolled onto “North Lanarkshire’s Working” portal.  Participants engagement with their child through story telling, songs and rhymes.

The Human Factor “hi, just a text to say I would like to come to the employability course which starts next month. Thanks” (FNP client) This text demonstrates the clients motivation to attend which she has discussed with her family nurse as a step to achieving her aspirations.

Next Steps  The 6 week course will commence in one locality this week and starts in another locality next week. The measures we will be collecting will be attendance at the course, client’s confidence, client’s sharing of stories with their children and following the course the number of participants moving on to training, education or employment which will improve their economic self sufficiency and well being.

“So What?” The expected outcomes for the participants is that they  Build confidence which will impact on their own self efficacy.  Improve the number of opportunities they use for sharing stories,songs and rhymes with their child which will enhance the child’s language and social development.  Improve their ability to seek and attain education, training and/or employment which will improve their household income and their well being.

Investment of Resources  What have you invested into this improvement work?  Staff time, costs of venues, childcare costs, transport to course, training costs, health and wellbeing passes.  What resources would you hope to reduce/stop in the future by implementing this change?  Reduce benefit claims by clients as they move into paid work.  Reduce referral to speech and language therapy due to improved communication skills of participant’s children.
