NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Earth’s Resources Mankind and Its’ societies have become increasingly dependent on Energy resources for the: –production of manufactured goods –raising of agricultural product –mining, drilling and mineral exploration –distribution of these products –transportation –services provided by utility companies

HMMMM.... What do you think nonrenewable resources are? Break it down... Nonrenewable? Resource?

NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is… a natural resource that cannot be re- made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

It takes fossil fuels 300 million yeares to form Dino’s first appeared during the Triassic period, approximately 230 million years ago, and for 135 million years, from the beginning of the Jurassic (about 200 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (65.5 million years ago) Therefore fossil Fuels “DID NOT” form from DINOSAURS

HOW IS COAL MADE ???

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?

States of Matter Solid – Coal World’s #1 fossil fuel source Swampy plants Liquid – Oil – Petrolium “Black Gold” Marine plants & animals Gas – Natural gas Marine plants and animals Mining –Coal Drilling –Oil –Natural gas

Reserves Amounts that can be extracted from the Earth in a profitable manner. Fuels can not be considered “Reserves” unless they can be extracted Economically.

NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

Nuclear Reactions Fission: fizz apart Splitting of an Atom Reactors and bombs Fusion: fuse together Combine two atoms Star Power(SUN)

Problems with Nuclear Production Radio Active Waste Products Human Safety Non-Renwable

HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

SOLAR Energy from the sun. Solar Panels, batteries, voltage invertors Why is energy from the sun renewable?

GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Drilling and piping of steam Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?

WIND Energy from the wind. Wind mills and turbines Why is energy from the wind renewable?

BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Corn and sugar cane Why is energy from biomass renewable?

WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Potential and Kinetic energies Why is energy of flowing water renewable? Fontanna Dam N.C. Mountians G.S.M.N.P.

Shuckstack Fire Tower from Fontanna Dam

Wave, Ocean Currents and Tide Action

Twin underwater turbines should be generating 1.2 megawatts of electricity, a demonstration of tidal power technology.

Wave Action – Bobbing A giant buoy that generates electricity by bobbing up and down in the ocean’s waves

Ores An ore is a type of rock that contains minerals with important elements including metals. The ores are extracted through mining; removing metals from ores is smelting Must be Profitable Bauxite Ore - Aluminum

Reclaimation of the Land to make the land where a location of resource extraction, such as, a mine, a strip mine or a drilling operation has been left environmentally suitable for future use.

Stewardship A concept of sustainable development, using state-of-the-art mining and extraction techniques that produce essential natural resources while preserving the environment. The development plans take into account the surrounding landscape and communities so that the community benefits from the project environmentally for the future. Video: Sound management, compliance and educational practices are the key.
