State Fire Marshal’s Office HMEP Grant – The Hazardous Materials Transportation Safety and Security Reauthorization Act of 2005 authorizes the U.S. DOT to provide assistance to public sector employees through training and planning grants to States, Territories, and Native American tribes for emergency response. – Encourage a comprehensive approach to emergency training and planning by incorporating the unique challenges of responses to transportation situations.

State Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat-Awareness 8-hours – This course is designed for the persons, who in the course of their normal duties, could encounter an emergency involving hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction and who are expected to recognize the presence of hazardous materials/WMD, protect themselves, call trained personnel and secure the area.

State Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat-Operations 32-hours – This course is designed to provide the First Responder with understanding of and the skills necessary to detect the presence of hazardous materials, identify the hazards associated with these materials, and to take DEFENSIVE action against these materials. – This course is for people who respond to releases of hazardous materials as part of the initial response for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property, or the environment.

State Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat On-Scene Incident Command 24-hours – This Course is designed to meet the training requirements in OSHA 29 CFR (q) (v) and WAC 296–824 for incident commanders at a hazardous materials incident. – Our course is designed to give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to manage all types of hazardous materials incidents. – It will provide emergency responders and industrial personnel with incident operations and management responsibilities the tools to effectively manage emergency incidents.

State Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat On-Scene Incident Command 24-hours – This training is prescribed for agency personnel who would act as the Incident Command at the scene of a Hazardous Materials Incident. – All WSP Sergeants are required to take this course due to their responsibility to respond to and take the role of Incident Command at a Hazardous Materials incident, if required. – Unified Command, Fire, Law Enforcement, EMS, EM

State Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat-Technician 40-hours – Compliant with WAC , OSHA 29 CFR and NFPA 472 recommended competencies will include the following subjects: Recognition and identification (review) Response chemistry Environmental regulations Radioactive materials Toxicology Medical surveillance Air monitoring and equipment Personal protective equipment Decontamination procedures Medical monitoring Spill control / containment

State Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat – Safety Officer 16-hours – The Hazmat Safety Officer course is designed to provide the student with skills, knowledge and tools to effectively evaluate a hazardous materials incident for safety and ensure that recognized safe operational practices are followed. – This class meets NFPA 472, 2013, Chapter 11 Competencies and will provide the student with knowledge to act as a Hazmat Branch Safety Officer.

State Fire Marshal’s Office HM Awareness/Operations “Train-The-Trainer” – This course will prepare instructors to deliver hazardous materials response training at the Awareness and Operations Levels. – It is designed to meet the training requirements for those trainers of individuals who respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous substances as part of the initial response for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property or the environment and includes the new NFPA 472 competencies

State Fire Marshal’s Office Other training provided to responders – Haz Mat IQ Teaches responders how to size-up any chemical in 10- seconds, verify the hazards in 2-minutes, select the proper meters and PPE and operate safely in the hot zone. – Crude Oil by Rail – Chemical Suicides – Pesticides – Many other topics important to responder community
