Human Karyotype New Journal Entry – “Human Karyotype” 1. How is DNA arranged in our cells? 2. How many chromosomes do humans have?

Genetic Information is Stored on Chromosomes This is a chromosome that is “replicated”; it has copied itself, so there are two identical strands.

Human Cells have 46 Chromosomes Our chromosomes are paired. We got one set from our mother, and one from our father. Each matched pair has information about the same traits, although the version may be different (e.g. brown vs blue for eye color)

Karyotype Activity Work with one other person from your team. Obtain a human karyotype sheet. These chromosomes are unreplicated - single stranded. Carefully cut out the chromosomes that are arranged randomly. DON’T LOSE ANY! Use length and staining pattern to match each cutout chromosome with its pair. Check your results, then glue them down. Which pair does not match? Label them “sex chromosomes”. Is this a male or female?

New Vocab Karyotype - the complete set of chromosomes for an organism. How many chromosomes make up the human karyotype? Homologous Pairs – Two chromosomes – one from the father and one from the mother – that carry information about the same traits.
