Presentation transcript:

Doler (to hurt) We use DOLER in the present to say that something hurts. DOLER follows the pattern of GUSTAR: the verb is only used in singular and plural, and we add the Indirect Object Pronouns (IOPs) to show who is “receiving” the pain. DOLER is STEM-CHANGING: o – ue (remember the boot!)

IOPs (Indirect Object Pronouns) menos teos leles ¡OJO! When we use “doler” we do NOT use possessive adjectives (mi, tu, su, etc.) for body parts. We use the definite articles el, la, los, las.

Examples Me duele la cabeza. ¿Te duelen los pies? Sí, me duelen mucho. Me duelen los ojos. No dormí bien. Me duele el estómago. Tal vez comí algo malo. A mi papá le duele la espalda. Él se cayó ayer. Nos duelen las manos porque aplaudimos mucho en el concierto.

Me duele la garganta porque grité mucho en el partido. ¡Ganamos por veinte puntos! Fue todo un éxito. A José le duele el corazón. Su novia se fue a la universidad y lo dejó sólo. Me duelen las rodillas.

Translate to Spanish My finger hurts. My head hurts. Her head hurts. She didn’t sleep well. My teeth hurt. I can’t eat ice cream. His back hurts.

Verbos reflexivos Reflexive Verbs Telling what people do for themselves

Verbos reflexivos Se usa el reflexivo cuando una persona hace una acción a si misma. (The reflexive is used when a person does an action to themselves.) Se usa pronombres reflexivos para indicar esto. (Reflexive pronouns are used to indicate this)

Verbos reflexivos Non-Reflexive:Reflexive: Marta cepilla el perro. Marco se cepilla. Marta = Subject Perro = direct object Marta performs action, but the dog receives it. Marco = Subject Marco = direct object Marco performs action, and he receives it.

Verbos reflexivos Non-Reflexive:Reflexive: Carlos lava la ropa. Aarón se lava. Carlos = Subject La ropa = direct object Carlos performs action, but the clothes receive it. Aarón = Subject Aarón = direct object Aarón performs action, and he receives it.

Verbos reflexivos Lavarse Yo me lavo I wash myself Tú te lavas You wash yourself Él se lava He washes himself Nos lavamos We wash ourselves Os laváis You wash yourselves Ellos se lavan They wash themselves Tú te lavas con el jabón. You wash yourself with soap.

Verbos reflexivos Los Negativos: To make a reflexive negative, add a “no” before the pronoun. ¿No te lavas las manos? Ellos no se cepillan el pelo.

Verbos reflexivos Diferencias: The reflexive can change the meaning in a sentence. Marta pone la blusa en la mochila. –Marta puts the blouse in the bag. Marta se pone la blusa. –Marta puts on her blouse. Marta duerme ocho horas. –Marta sleeps eight hours. Marta se duerme enseguida. –Marta goes to sleep immediately.

Ella se llama Marta. –She calls herself Marta (Her name is Marta) Marta divierte a sus amigos. –Marta amuses her friends. Marta se divierte. –Marta amuses herself (Has fun).

Verbos reflexivos PRETÉRITO: Reflexive verbs in the preterite work EXACTLY the same. Conjugate the verb in the past tense (preterite), then add the reflexive pronoun. Marta llamó a Carlos. –Marta called Carlos. Ella se llama Marta. –She calls herself Marta (Her name is Marta) Marta divirtió a sus amigos. –Marta amused her friends. Marta se divirtió. –Marta amused herself (Had fun).

Verbos reflexivos Con el cuerpo y la ropa: When you use the reflexive with body parts or clothing you use an article (el/la) not a possessive adjective (mi/mis) Yo me lavé la cara. ¿Te pusiste la camisa? Me cepillé los dientes. Me corté el brazo.

Verbos reflexivos Con infinitivos: When you use the reflexive with an infinitive of a verb, the pronoun is attached to the end of the INFINITIVE. Yo voy a lavarme el pelo. Él va a lavarse. Nosostros vamos a maquillarnos.
