What is it?  Federal Requirement  Acquisition of English Language  Aligned with the ELPS  Holistically rated assessments  Reading assessment

Who will be assessed?  Student who are actively coded as Limited English Proficient.  Includes whose parents deny ESL services  DOES NOT included monitored students

Who will be raters?  English Language Arts Teachers who have LEP student is their class  Rater Credentials  Have the student in class during the assessment window  Be knowledgeable about the student’s ability to use English in instructional and informational sessions.  Complete the online training modules

I am not an ELA teacher. Why am I here?  Content area teachers will assist with the collection of writing samples.  You will not be required to rate, but if the verifier finds your samples inadequate these samples will be returned.

General Sample Requirements:  Sample must have the students name and date in the student’s hand writing.  No samples may be dated before February 17, 2014  Writing samples must be authentic and are grounded in the content area TEKS and ELPS  No copied writing samples  No heavy reliance on dictionary or thesaurus  No teacher corrections or graded papers  Not edited works-Students can seek occasional assistance and guidance, but samples should show THEIR abilities.  Samples need to be written in English  No worksheets or answering questions assignments  No Rushed or brief samples

Social Studies Due February 19th  Expository or Procedural Writing Examples  Writing about a historical figure, the person’s contributions or significance, etc.  Writing an expository piece about an important historical or current event  Writing about something you are learning in your social studies class  Defending a point of view about a governmental policy or controversial issue  Writing a persuasive piece to influence a change in policy or law

Science Due February 25 th  Expository or Procedural Writing Examples  Explaining a scientific process you have learned about  Explaining the steps in an experiment or scientific investigation you have done  Writing about something you are learning in your science class  Writing about why lab rules are important  Writing about how to use a certain device or piece of science equipment

Math Due March 3, 2014  Expository or Procedural Writing Examples  Writing about a way you have used mathematics outside of school  Explaining the steps you use in a mathematical process  Writing about something you are learning in your mathematics class  Writing to reflect the thinking you do to solve a problem

ELAR Due March 7, 2014  Personal Narrative  A time when you learned a lesson, resolved a problem with another person, etc.  What true friendship is, the importance of believing in yourself, setting goals, etc.  What you like, don’t like, or would like to see changed about certain school rules or policies  A person you admire, a person who has influenced your life, etc.

ELAR March 19, 2014  Past Event Narrative  Stories based on something shown in a picture or pictures  Narratives about something that happened or that you did that was disappointing, unforgettable, surprising, interesting, unexpected, funny, unfair, etc.  Original stories composed in creative writing activities  Narratives about what you did this morning, yesterday, last weekend

Raters  Sign Oath Page 46  Timeline (handout)  Training requirements (Page 13)  If your Basic Training Course it older than 2011, you must retake course.  Take course 2-12  Once the Basic Training Course is complete, raters may calibrate  Raters may not rate until they have successful complete calibration activities

Calibration  Page Deadline Feb. 24, 2014  You have 3 opportunities  First two are independent  Do not take set 2 immediately after not being successful on set 1  Sets are not repeated  If a rater is not successful on set 2, they must attend training on Feb. 25, 2014 before attempting set 3
