Definition of Reading Reading is a dynamic process in which the reader interacts with text to construct meaning. Inherent in constructing meaning is the reader’s ability to activate prior knowledge, use reading strategies, and adapt to the reading situation.

Questioning 1. Turn the title into a question. This becomes a major purpose for your reading. Example: How did the geography of the region affect the fertile crescent?

Questioning 2. Write down any questions that come to mind during the survey. (You can use either a notebook or journal entry How did the geography of the region effect the fertile crescent? Make sure to leave space between questions to record your answers What makes people believe that the fertile crescent has a challenging environment?

Questioning 3. Turn Sub - Headings into questions. Example: What makes people believe that the fertile crescent has a challenging environment?

Questioning 5. Write down unfamiliar vocabulary and determine the meaning. Example: What does it mean to barter for goods?

Read Actively 1. Read to search for answers to your questions. Example: The flood waters from the mountains helped to the build farm, which allowed a society to develop. How did the geography of the region effect the fertile crescent? What makes people believe that the fertile crescent has a challenging environment?

Read Actively 2. Respond to questions and use context clues for unfamiliar words. Example: What does it mean to barter for goods?

Read Actively 3. React to unclear passages, confusing terms, questionable statements by generating additional questions. Example: What were the real effects of irrigation, and how did they irrigate??

Reading Actively Reading Actively Includes: Read to search for answers to your questions Respond to questions and use context clues for unfamiliar words React to unclear passages, confusing terms, and questionable statements by generating additional questions

Recite 1. Look away from the answers and the book to recall what was read.

Recite 2. Recite answers to questions in writing. Record your answers underneath you questions Example: The snow melt form the mountains to the north supplied an abundance of water! How did the geography of the region effect the fertile crescent? What makes people believe that the fertile crescent has a challenging environment?

Recite 3. Reread the text for unanswered questions Make sure to reread to find answers to all of your questions. Example: Make sure to reread to find answers to all of your questions.
