Art: The Visual World Monday January 21, 2013 Do Now- answer question on front of packet Objective - You will write notes on the Impressionist movement - create your own Impressionist drawing - answer questions

What does the word impression mean?

-Impressionist painters began as Realists -interested in natural colors and landscapes that they painted outdoors. -Impressionists realized that the color of light had a tremendous effect on the color of objects. The color of the atmosphere at different times of day had changed the appearance of objects as they assumed them to be. -The name Impressionism was first used in Jest when Monet exhibited a work called “Impression: Sunrise” in an 1847 show. -the painting represents what a person sees when taking a quick look at a sunrise over a harbor. A Critic called these works Impressions and not paintings – the title stuck Impressionism gradually built up a following throughout Europe, Russia, and was especially popular in the United States. Impressionist revolutionized art by making light and color their subject matter. Artists seek to create an instant impression, not a detailed analysis. Claude Monet “Impression Sunrise”

Claude Monet “Rouen Cathedral” Claude Monet “Rouen Cathedral” -Monet painted the colors he saw. He did not smear colors together but instead he let the viewer’s eye blend colors from a distance this technique is called optical mixing or the applying of broken color. -Monet loved to work outdoors and to directly confront the environment he was painting. There are no definite edges or contours to anything Monet painted. The more he painted out doors the more he realized that colors were constantly changing with the moving of the sun or the interruption of clouds and haze. To analyze these changes, he decided to paint a single subject at different times of day, at different times of year, under different light. Monet recorded these light and color changes on the church in more than thirty canvases. Color and light became a new way of seeing. Monet stuck to the early credo of the Impressionist group: to depict visual sensations as experienced at a certain time and place.

Manet The Railroad -Manet felt that the message of the artist was the brushstrokes and patches of paint on the canvas, not the subject matter that they represented. The brushstrokes and color became the subject matter. -He wanted to make paintings that could be enjoyed for their color and arrangement. -Manet was influenced by Japanese woodcuts. -The format of the painting is like a snapshot of a young woman and girl at the train station. -All four sides of the canvas seem to have been “cropped,” much as one would “crop” a snapshot. The candid, off hand appearance is greatly enhanced by this device

Degas “Rehearsal on the Stage” Degas was interested in casual subjects and candid glimpses of people in action. He carefully considered design and the positioning of people and objects. Degas was a master of line and drawing and he didn’t want to give it up for the Impressionistic style. He did studies of the human body and horses in motion and applied them to his own unique presentation of the figure in his paintings. Degas liked to paint in series, that is many paintings exploring the same theme over a period of time. One subject he did a series of was the ballet. He captured the instantaneous glimpse of figures in action. Degas explored the indoor, controlled lighting. The views are often from peculiar vantage points – which enhanced the candid glimpses of the dancers working at their craft. No matter how unbalanced or casual his groupings seem, they are always calculated to produce an asymmetric balance. This balance produces a feeling of immediacy and non-planning. The medium of pastels allowed Degas to convey the color and excitement of the ballet with more assurance that he could with oils. Degas was the first artist to exhibit his pastels as finished works. He was a master of oils, pastels, pencil and sculpture.

“Dance at the Moulin de la Galette” RENOIR -Throughout his career, he remained interested in painting women and the nude figure. He was interested in the bright, cheerful effects of light and air. Flickering light filters through the trees and speckles the people with bits of sunshine. In this delightful interplay of light and shadow, Renoir uses no black paint, but all shadows are tinged with blue. The darker the value, the deeper the blue mixed with other colors.

Mary Cassatt “Sleeping Baby” -Mary Cassatt was born in Philadelphia. After studying art at the Pennsylvania Academy, she left for Paris. While in Paris she was drawn to the work of the Impressionists especially Degas. She developed a style that combined the informal subject and composition of the impressionists with her personal desire for precision and definition. Mothers and children were Mary Cassatt’s favorite subjects. The center of interest is the tender touching of faces of the mother and her child. Like Degas, Cassatt used line along legs and arms to strengthen the design and to add solidity to the figures. Yet, the loose pastel strokes and high-keyed colors are features of the impressionists with whom she exhibited.
