Smart Planet The IBM Smart Planet initiative concentrates on the world’s infrastructure, those systems and processes that enable goods to be developed, manufactured, bought and sold, and services that deliver everything from electricity and financial transactions, to efficient healthcare— to name a few—and that directly affect billions of lives.

Facts There are more than 1 billion transistors per human. An estimated 2 billion people will soon be on the Internet. At the same time, we are heading toward one trillion connected objects—comprising “the Internet of things”. Worldwide mobile telephone subscriptions has surpassed 3.3 billion—one for every two people on the planet. Over 30 billion Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags are produced globally, embedded in products, passports, buildings—even animals. Hundreds of satellites are in orbit around the Earth, generating terabytes* of data every day.

Cloud computing Cloud computing is emerging as a means to connect and provision the proliferating array of end-user devices, sensors, and actuators with powerful, massively scaleable back-end systems.

Cloud computing Cloud computing is the use of computing resources (hardware and software) that are delivered as a service over a network (typically the Internet). Cloud computing entrusts remote services with a user's data, software and computation. End users access cloud-based applications through a web browser or a light-weight desktop or mobile app. while the business software and user's data are stored on servers at a remote location. In the business model using software as a service, users are provided access to application software and databases. Cloud providers manage the infrastructure and platforms that run the applications. SaaS providers generally price applications using a subscription fee. Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of scale.

Characteristics of Smart Systems Instrumented: Any activity or process can now be measured, better understood, modeled. Interconnected: By tapping into the collective intelligence of the entire value chain through the connection of whole systems. Intelligent: Every insight derived from this world of smart devices can lead to value addition by enabling better actions.

Characteristics of smart Businesses Focus on value: Smart companies do more with less, focus on their core business Initiatives. Exploit opportunities: Smart companies know how to capture share in their market, build future capabilities. Act with speed: Smart companies have leaders who get the information required to act, set, and communicate the organization’s agenda.

Understanding the Smarter Planet In this new world, as every human being, company, organization, city, nation, natural and man-made system becomes interconnected, instrumented, and literally made more intelligent. It requires the following critical things: New Intelligence Smart Work Dynamic capabilities Green & Beyond

New Intelligence New intelligence solutions deliver value across one or more of the following dimensions: Information management: Effective management and use of the explosive volume and variety of historical and real-time information Predictive capability: Proactively addressing opportunities and threats with predictive analytics in real time.

New Intelligence Engaging the value chain: Pervasive information, collected from a multitude of sources across the value chain and made useful to all who need it. Operating with speed: Speeding time to value by delivering trusted, accurate, and timely information to the right decision makers at all levels within the organization.

Smart Work Smart work is about applying new levels of intelligence to how every person, organization, and man-made system interacts. Each interaction represents a chance to do things better, through flexible business models. Processes need to adapt dynamically to changing economic conditions to mitigate risk and drive profit.

Smart Work: Attributes Agile business models help businesses quickly shift direction to reflect economic realities. Collaboration helps people extend internal and external relationships to expand expertise and access new information and resources outside their usual workgroups. Dynamic business processes help businesses access trusted information, reuse assets, and reduce costs by automating manual processes. Smart Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) converts siloed, inefficient applications into reusable services.

SOA SOA allows the underlying service capabilities and interfaces to be composed into processes. Where each process is itself a service. Because each new process is exposed through a standardized interface, the underlying implementation of the individual service providers is free to change without impacting how the service is consumed.

Dynamic Infrastructure A dynamic infrastructure helps to transform physical and digital assets into more valued services. It is highly optimized to achieve greater results. Dynamic infrastructure can deliver three distinct benefits as follows:
