Virtual Advising & Registration

 The College of Arts and Science has a team of experienced academic advisors who work on issues related to international students in the College. Advisors help students adjust to the College, work with issues related to international academic credentials and English writing courses, and help students by coordinating with other relevant offices such as the Office of Global Services (OGS), the Wasserman Center for Career Development, and the University Learning Center (ULC).

Advanced Standing Credit  CAS students are permitted to apply a maximum of 32 advanced standing credits towards their record.  Credit and/or advanced standing may be awarded for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.  Credit and/or advanced standing may also be awarded for these country- specific examinations: A-Level and Cambridge Pre-U (United Kingdom); A-Level (Singapore); CAPE: CXC Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (Commonwealth Caribbean Region); Baccalauréat (France); Abitur (Germany); Esame di Stato – Maturitá (Italy); Matura (Switzerland). Here is a relevant link on the CAS Bulletin webpage:  ALI Placement Exam  Students required to take the American Language Institute (ALI) Placement Test must do so in order to be cleared for course registration. Students must register for this exam within 48 hours of paying their deposits and must complete both sections of the exam as early as possible in May.  Course placement based on the exam results must be honored.

Students who were not required to take the American Language Institute (ALI) English Proficiency Test by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, or who did take the test and received a Level 9 (“Test Out”) placement, will follow these guidelines:  Cohort Meeting (COHRT- UA) - required non-credit course (Already Enrolled)  Freshman Seminar (FRSEM-UA) (Already Enrolled)  Expository Writing course: Writing the Essay (EXPOS-UA 1) or International Writing Workshop I (EXPOS-UA 4)**  CORE Course (select one from below)*** 1) Cultures and Contexts (CORE-UA 5--) or 2) Physical Science or Life Science (CORE-UA 2–- or 3--)* 3) Quantitative Reasoning (CORE-UA 1--) or math substitute course* / ^  Departmental Introductory Course: e.g. History of Western Art I (ARTH-UA 1); Introduction to Macroeconomics or Microeconomics (ECON-UA 1 or 2); Principles of Biology I (BIOL-UA 11) ^^ NOTE: Students who score between 680 and 720 on the SAT Critical Reading should take the self-diagnostic test to decide which course would offer them the opportunity for better learning: Self-Diagnostic Test Self-Diagnostic Test NOTE: International Students who receive lower than 680 on the SAT Critical Reading and for whom English is not their primary language should consider taking the Freshman Seminar in the spring. *Students who receive a suitable score for advanced standing credit on an advanced standing exam may be exempt from Calculus or the Physical Science and/or Life Science requirements: ** For those enrolled in International Writing Workshop I (EXPOS-UA 4) in the fall semester, International Writing Workshop II (EXPOS-UA 9) will be taken during the spring semester.
