Why we do this presentation:  It is important that students base their decisions on good information relevant to their abilities, interests and work ethic and possible future plans.  Forest Heights Community School has changed the way they do course selection. This year students are being asked to pick their courses and to also choose their schedule.

High School Credits A credit is awarded when a student has demonstrated acceptable achievement of the outcomes of an approved course. (50%) Each course is normally completed in a minimum of 110 hours of scheduled instructional time. (Note the importance of attendance)

If you receive your first credit in the school year or later the following represents your graduation requirements. You must have a minimum of 18 credits. NO more than 7 grade 10 credits may be used. Grading at Forest Heights Grade 10 Home Room Earn a minimum of four credits to Proceed to grade 11 Home Room Earn sufficient credits to be eligible for Graduation to (eg. 18-8=10) Proceed to a Grade 12 Home Room

Semesters Forest Heights Community School will be operating within a semester system in the school year. A course successfully completed within a semester earns one credit.  Two semesters  First semester – September to end of January  Second semester – February to end of June  Four courses per semester  Each scheduled class is approximately 60 minutes long. Some grade 10 courses may take place half the time but all year for a full 110 hours.

ATTENDANCE & STUDENT SKILLS Regular attendance is the single most important factor in determining good academic results. Failure to attend can result in poor grades.

Educational Requirements Students are responsible for ensuring that the courses selected meet:  High School Completion requirements for N.S.  Entrance requirements for their post- secondary study. Talk with a counsellor  Personal academic abilities.

Planning your selection For all grade 10 students are required to select at 8 courses. Grade 11 students select 7. Grade 12 students select at least 6. Co-op courses count. Third and the Least Challenging Math at Work 10 (Graduation) Math at Work 11 (Graduation) Math at Work 12 (Graduation) Math Essentials 10 (Graduation) Math Essentials 11 (Graduation) Math Essentials 12 (Graduation)  Allow students to graduate.  The grade 12 courses can be used to gain entry to many Nova Scotia Community College programs.  Attend University without using Math  Teacher without using Math  Lawyer without using Math

Math Recommendations The grade 9 Mathematics teacher has recommend the Math route each grade 9 student should consider. Each student has a form which must be signed by parent parent/guardian. If you don’t agree with the Math teacher’s recommendation, that’s okay. However, a meeting with the Math teacher, the parents/guardians and the student is required in order to look at this decision carefully.

Finding the right Science Science 10 (Allows students to continue in any of the academic grade 11 courses. Biology, Chemistry, Physics.) Step 3 Electives: Choose the remainder of your courses to total 8 courses/credits from those listed. You will have one course selected in each block. You should have a minimum of 8 courses circled on the selection form.

Step 4 Specialized Programs: If a student received educational support while in grade 9 they will likely require this support in their grades 10, 11 and 12 years.

Advanced Placement AP is a rigorous program devoted to educational excellence. AP sets high performance standards for students. AP involves dedicated and creative teachers committed to their students, their subject matter, and profession.

Skilled Trades Certified Journeypersons earn between $ and $ per year. Canada has a shortage of certified skilled trades people. Skilled Trades 10 and Construction Technology 11 can lead to a Co-operative Education credit with a Journeyperson. These hours can be used toward an apprenticeship.

There will be a course fair Wednesday April 13 th. There will be a parent presentation the evening of Wed. April 13 th at 6:30 p.m. Also: List any courses which you were unable to select. Co-operative Education must be written in.
