4 What Are Online Item Samplers? Available to students and other users to become familiar with item types and format of the online tests Aligned to the Minnesota Academic Standards but contain fewer items than the actual tests NOT practice tests CANNOT be used to predict how well students will perform on the assessments
5 How Do I Access Online Item Sampler? Item Samplers page on PearsonAccess Through the Training Center There are two ways to access online item samplers. Either way provides the same online item sampler.
6 Why are there two ways and which way should I choose? It depends on the purpose for using them and what you want to accomplish. Access on the Item Samplers page on PearsonAccess: –Use to allow students to become familiar with item types, test format, and online functionality Access through the Training Center: –Use to allow students to become familiar with item types, test format, and online functionality AND –Use to allow both Test Monitors and students to become familiar with test administration
7 Differences and Similarities OverviewItem Samplers PageTraining Center Are Test Monitors required to create a test session and approve students to test? No, test sessions are not created and students do not need to be approved to log into the item sampler. Yes, test sessions must be created and students must be approved in PearsonAccess before students can log into the item sampler. Is student login information required? No, students only enter their names to access the item sampler. Yes, students must have login information (first and last names, MARSS/SSID number, and test session test code) to log in to the item sampler. Are students able to practice navigating and answering test questions? Yes, students can practice navigating in the item sampler and practice answering questions. Are students able to exit and resume the item sampler? No, students will not be able to exit and resume the item sampler where they left off. The student will need to start the item sampler over. Yes, students can exit the item sampler and resume the item sampler where they left off later if needed. They will resume the item sampler on the item last viewed. Are students able to review their score and the correct responses? Yes, students can view their score and the correct responses to the item sampler items upon completion of the item sampler. 8 Accessing Online Item Samplers on PearsonAccess Access on the Home page or any of the tabs on PearsonAccess Select the Online Item Samplers tab Select the grade, subject, and test NOTE: All mathematics and science item samplers contain text-to-speech. Mathematics and science item samplers with accommodated text-to-speech are available for students with an IEP or 504 plan or English learners who will use accommodated text-to-speech for testing.
9 Accessing Online Item Samplers Through the Training Center The Training Center allows Test Monitors to practice: Creating test sessions Approving students Monitoring an online test session The Training Center: Does not contain any student data Students need to be added Test sessions need to be created
10 Adding Students to the Training Center Options Information Create Sample StudentsAdd Students ManuallyUpload a Student Data File DescriptionCreating sample students allows the Test Monitor to quickly create groups of students in the Training Center. Students created using the Sample Student process will have generic student names and will not have student- specific information. This process allows for student-specific data to be used for the item samplers; however, the information is entered one student at a time. Uploading a file allows student-specific data to be loaded into the PearsonAccess Training Center to use for the item samplers. User rolesAll user rolesDistrict Assessment Coordinator, District Administrator, School Administrator, School Assessment Coordinator One of the following three options must be completed by the appropriate user role: * These options are specific to the Training Center. Students CANNOT be added to PearsonAccess for actual testing.

13 Create and Start a Practice Test Session A practice test session must be created regardless of the method used to add students. Practice test sessions for item samplers administered through the Training Center can be created at any time. Creating and starting a test session, approving, monitoring, and resuming students tests are very similar to online test administration in PearsonAccess.
