After Software Assurance expires, you can continue to use cold backup software already installed, but you cannot install any additional cold backups.

Software Assurance cannot be renewed or purchased. SA benefits start when licenses are issued (granted). is sent to all Open volume license customers 3 months before SA benefits expire. Wording is tricky, but the meaning is that the SA benefits are about to expire, nothing else expires. Licenses do NOT expire, SA benefits do.
