The Graduate Market

The Headlines

Some facts... In April to June 2013 graduates were more likely to be employed than those who left education with qualifications of a lower standard. Non-graduates aged 21 to 30 have consistently higher unemployment rates than all other groups and have much higher inactivity rates than recent graduates. Over 40% of graduates worked in the public administration, education and health industry. Annual earnings for graduates reached a higher peak at a later age than the annual earnings for non-graduates. Graduates from the top UK universities earned more than graduates from other UK universities. Graduates in the Labour Market 2013, ONS

Today’s graduate market Todays graduate market is much more complex. The biggest growth in vacancies is expected at public sector employers, accounting & professional services firms, City investment banks, retailers and engineering & industrial companies which together intend to recruit almost 1,200 extra graduates in Degree discipline isn’t as important as it once was.

KIS data DLHE data Reported from 80% of UK leavers, 55% EU, 6 months out Longitudinal reported from 13.2%, 3 years out

KIS employability data Pros Same survey for all unis High numbers of responses 6 months out Gives students access to more data for their decisions Cons Needs to be viewed critically Some sectors don’t start with high salaries /managerial roles 6 months in! Small sample sizes can lead to misleading data Not broken down by sector

Universities publish more:

Speculative Applications Crucial for a number of sectors e.g. Media, Marketing, Arts & Heritage Useful employability skill to develop regardless of university background 29% of Oxford graduates found employment via networking, speculative applications or personal contacts Alumni networks & LinkedIn increasingly important Information interviewing key for researching SMEs
