MBChB Selection UCAS receivedTriaged for minimum criteria Academic scoring + UKCAT Non-academic attributes from the personal statement Top 1000 forms Scored 2 assessors 3 rd assessor if 2 or more difference Better of GSCE or AS + A2 + UKCAT

Mandatory Academic Criteria GCSE At least 6 grade Bs must be offered including: English Maths Dual Science/Double Science, or Chemistry and Biology For school leavers predicted 3 As, we had >2200 with better than 9 GCSE As

Ranking Academic Criteria GCSE-level We consider your nine best results If your school “cashes in” AS results, we will consider those instead of your GCSEs We calculate scores for each and take the higher (3 As at AS = 9 A* GCSE)

Ranking Academic Criteria A-level Grades AAA – A* no advantage – General Studies and Critical Thinking are not acceptable. – No Chemistry with Biology and Human Biology. – No Chemistry with Maths and Further Maths We use achieved grades if available (and offer, if made, will be unconditional), otherwise we use predicted grades. Almost all candidates are predicted AAA, which is our standard conditional offer.

Academic - UKCAT The typical applicant score is around 2500 (lowest year mean score was 2463 in 2009, highest was 2553 in 2013) A score based on UKCAT performance is combined with a score based on GCSE/AS/A2 performance or prediction A high academic score can compensate for a low UKCAT The mean score of those invited for interview is slightly higher (2724 last year) but there is no “cut off” In 2013 we invited to interview a candidate with a score of 2160, but didn’t invite the candidate with the highest UKCAT score!

What evidence do you need? How have you looked into a career in medicine? Have you taken positions of responsibility? Do you know a bit about the world outside your friends and family? Do you know how to relax and de-stress?

A typical applicant A typical applicant who gets to the interview stage would have all of the following: Excellent GCSE or AS grades Predicted or achieved 3 As at A level (or ABB for A2L) A good UKCAT score A good personal statement But there is room for compensation between any of these fields!

What does the interview do? MMI (Multiple Mini-Interview) Assess further some of the non- academic attributes

Our MMI 8 stations, 4 groups per day, 64 candidates per day Each stations- 1 minute reading, 7 minute task Each station tests 1 or more attributes Includes: Communication skills, UCAS statement, ethical reasoning, negotiation, current affairs, situational judgement test, written station…….

Second time/re-sit applications Assessed in competition with all the first-time applications Examination re-sit results are only accepted in exceptional circumstances – evidence of circumstances is needed If you want to reapply: Ask yourself WHY your application was rejected. We do provide some feedback – but we won’t rewrite your application for you! Think about what you can do to make the necessary changes MAKE THEM!
