Welcome Opening Prayer ED 212 Foundations of Education

Review 3 Minute Quick Write What is the difference between schooling and education? Write the 5 characteristics of a good school. – Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum – Challenging Goals and Feedback – Safe and Orderly Environment – Parent and Community Involvement – Collegiality and Professionalism Write and define one of the five Philosophical views of Education – Essentialism – Perennialism – Progressivism – Social Reconstruction – Existentialism

Philosophical Views 1.Essentialism – Students are taught the “essential” knowledge of language, math, science, history, social studies, etc. 2.Perennialism – Wisdom or knowledge has been accumulated over the years and can be found in the great works of literature, arts, and religious texts, e.g. Bible and Qur’an. 3.Progressivism – The child is the center of the educational process. Children learn by doing interesting things and useful things that relate to their lives. They learn through traditional texts and hands-on activities.

Philisophical Views 4.Social Reconstructionism: – Schools should provide a social and political order by emphasizing moral, political, and economic education. 5.Existentialism – Rejects the idea of any type of definitive knowledge and maintain that students know from within what is best for them to pursue.

Objectives Content: I will be able to define guaranteed and viable curriculum. I will be able to identify and define the two premises of a guaranteed and viable curriculum. I will identify and define the three types of curriculum Language: I will discuss and evaluate the curriculum for one of my classes and determine if it is a guaranteed and viable curriculum.

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Guaranteed Will happenViable Possible Based on two premises 1.Opportunity to Learn 2.Time to Learn

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Opportunity to Learn Strongest relationship with student achievement of all the school factors 3 Type of Curriculum – Intended Curriculum – Implemented Curriculum – Attained Curriculum What Works in Schools, Marzano, 2003

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum 3 Types of Curriculum – Intended Curriculum Government prescriptions – Implemented Curriculum Content actually delivered by the teacher – Attained Curriculum Content actually learned by the student

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Time to Learn KNC Economics Prescription (Forms 4) – Economic System – 3 Weeks or 7-8 teaching days Is this a guaranteed and viable curriculum? Turn and talk

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Action Steps 1.Identify and communicate the content considered essential for all students versus that considered supplemental or necessary only for those seeking postsecondary education. 2.Ensure that the essential content can be addressed in the amount of time available for instruction

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Action Steps 3.Sequence and organize the essential content in such a way that students have ample opportunity to learn it. 4.Ensure that teachers address the essential content. 5.Protect the instructional time that is available.

Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum Activity 1.Review the prescriptions and scheme of work for one of your classes. 2.Evaluate, discuss with a partner, and determine if it is a “guaranteed and viable curriculum.” 3.Share with the class.

Assignment “My Personal Philosophy of Education” – Write a word paper – Discuss your beliefs in terms of the classic schools of thought about educational philosophy (in other words, I will look for that language in your paper). – Classroom presentation Grading Rubric – 2 Points - On Time – 5 Points - Organization (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) – 10 points - Ideas discussed using some of the classic schools of thought – 3 points Length ( words) Due Tuesday, 11 March

Objectives Content: I will be able to define guaranteed and viable curriculum. I will be able to identify and define the two premises of a guaranteed and viable curriculum.
