Welcome Teachers! - WELCOME TO TEACHER WEBSITE BUILDING 101.

Before we start.  We have an hour of time to teach you everything you will need to know about website transferring.  We will have a 30 minute Power Point and 30 minutes to have you play around on the new site.  We will have time to answer questions after every section but due to the limited time that we have we might have to save some of the questions when we are finished. (Just write them down and we will answer them when we can )

What we will be discussing today.  Our new site / Navigation.  Registering to our new site.  Site Manager Overview.  Different Apps.  Transferring Content. (From old site to the new site)  Calendar Building.

Our New Website.

Navigation (My Start Bar)  This is the first toolbar you see at the top of your webpage.  District Home : Takes you back to our district home page.  Select School: This drop down box will allow you to choose which school you want to view.  Sign In / Register: This will allow you to either sign up for an account with our site or sign in using your current credentials.  Search: Search feature for website browsing.

Navigation (Channel Bar)  The Channel Bar is the website navigation bar.  This will house all the different links that are available for your website (i.e. Home, Our District, Departments, Students, Parents, etc)  When you mouse over one of these options more links will become available. The drop downs from the channel bar are called “Sections”  Each “Section” can house additional pages.

Navigation (Title Bar / Global Apps)  The Title Bar is the portion of the site located with your schools name.  This houses something called “Global Apps”  Our Global Apps are Google Apps, PowerSchool, Calendar, Staff Directory.  These should be set district wide for every school webpage.

Registering / Signing in.  For Current D7 employees: Navigate to My Start Bar > Sign in.  Type in your login to our school network (Example: Dave Smith = dsmith)  For first time login your password will be “changeme” (Example: Username = dsmith Password = changeme)  If you are a new employee to D7 Pleas click on the “Register” button.  Fill out all required information to register for our site.  Once completed please inform Brendan or Brady and we will assign you rights to your pages.

Changing your password.  Once you have successfully signed in lets change your default password.  Navigate to My Start Bar > My Account > Edit Account Settings  On the Left hand navigation click on “Change Password”  It will ask for you to type in your current password and then your new password

Site Manager  Once you have signed in and successfully changed your password we will enter in the back end of our website called “Site Manager”  This will be how you will transfer content from our old site to our new one.  To open site manager Go to My Start Bar > Site Manager.  When it opens up it should look like this…

Site Manager

Site Manager (Navigation)  How Do I…? : This button is located at the top of the page underneath your name. This button is very useful to help you when you are in a jam and unsure of how to proceed.  New Page: Need to add a specific page for a specific class? This is where you will be able to add more pages to your current page if you have more information that cannot fit on your homepage.  Organize Pages: Want to change the way your pages are pulled up on the side of the website? You can organize the page alphabetically or to a custom format that you choose.

Site Manager (Navigation)  Recycle Bin: Accidentally delete something? Well it might not be gone just yet…If you delete something in mistake check the recycle bin to see if you are able to restore it.  View Website: Want to view the changes you just made in real time on the new site without opening a new page? Click View website to pull up an exact layout of what your content will look like once the site goes live.  Active / Inactive: Working on a page but not ready for it to be viewed live? Each page you are working on has an icon like this. You can toggle that page to either be "Active" so anyone and everyone can see it, or "Inactive" if this page is still under construction.

Lets Talk Apps  What are “Apps”  The “Apps” Provided by site manager are how you will layout the content you transfer over from the old site.  Different apps provide different features (We will go over several of the most used apps)  Lets go over some examples…

Different Apps  Content App: The Content Page will be your most used app. This app will create you a page that will allow you to mix text and pictures. There will be some formatting changes that you will have to incorporate when you add pictures so please make sure to use the “View Website” to see how it will layout on our webpage.  File Library: Do you have several pdf, word, excel, etc. documents needed for your class that need to be available? The file library app will house all your needed documents on a specific page which will be able to be downloaded by the simple click of a mouse.  Assignments app: Use the assignments app to show new, current, or past due assignments that need to be turned in. This app can make organizing homework assignments easy!

Different Apps  Link Library: Do you have several websites that you reference for your class on a daily basis that need to be easily accessible? The link library app will create you a page that will house all of the URL Links to these different sites in one location for your students for easy access.  Document Viewer: Ever have a PDF or Word file needed to be viewed but not downloaded? Use a Document Viewer to display contents of PDF files and some Word Documents on your teacher page.  Photo Gallery: Have multiple pictures of classwork you would like to display on your Teacher page? Try a Photo Gallary App. This app will house your photo's in a nice slide show style applet that will cycle through the pictures for you. This can be customized for picture size, slide show speed, and location of the app.

Changing Layout of Apps  If you are looking to format your apps or your content a certain way you can manage the layout of your page.  To do this open up site manager and select the page you want to edit the layout in.  Click on the “Manage App & Layout” on the right hand corner of the page.  You can either add additional apps to that page or change the layout of that current page. (i.e. one column, two column, three column, etc.)  We will go over this more here in a few seconds.

Transferring Content  Become a master of Copy and Paste.  Copy, Paste, Format.  Lets show you how its done!

Calendar Building  Some teachers feel the need to plan out their entire lesson plan onto a calendar to show what exactly is coming up for the students in the month. The calendar app will allow you to make events, register for certain events, and allow parents and students link in with their phones.  By Default there should be a calendar app already added into your teacher page.  When you click on the “Calendar app” it should look like this…

Calendar Building

 To add a new event on the calendar select “New Event”  Once you click on new event a new page should open up that looks like this…

Calendar Building  Event Title : Type in the name of the event that will be posted on your calendar (i.e. Field Trip, Tests, Finals, Project due dates, etc)  Set a start and end date.  Add a description for the event.  Select “Save” when you are ready to post your calendar event.

Calendar Building (Registering for Events)  The Calendar App comes with a “Register” Feature which allows people to sign up for events on your calendar.  An example of using this is if you are going on a field trip and are looking for several parent volunteers to come along.  You can select the amount of volunteers you need and a deadline for them to register for the event.  Here is how you can do this for your calendar…

Calendar Building (Registering for Events)  Open your Calendar App > Select “New Event” Fill in the required tittle and description > Select “Registration” On the top navigation bar.

Calendar Building (Register with your Phone)  Want to register your cell phone so you can get calendar updates on your cellphone? This is a great way for parents and even students to keep up to date with events and assignments for your school or your class!  Navigate to the calendar you would like to add to your mobile device.  Select the “iCAL” Button on the upper right hand corner of the calendar.  Follow the on site instructions for syncing your device to the calendar. (iOS, Android, MS Outlook, Other Calendars)

GO TIME!  Time to get your hands dirty and begin transferring.  Brendan and Brady will field questions that you might have just raise your hand!  We will make this learning material available for you all to view at your convenience.
