FY15 DoD Participation in Voluntary Education Source : Defense Manpower Data Center & Voluntary Education Information Management System 831K (40%) DoD Service members participated in VolEd in FY15:  15% participated in Tuition Assistance (TA), taking more than 760K courses ( $518.5M in TA expenditures)  15% participated in Defense education programs sponsored by DANTES  52K college degrees and nearly 1,000 certificates were earned 5

College Admissions Exams (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, Praxis) Standardized tests that help colleges evaluate potential students Used for special military programs & graduate school entrance DANTES funds Active Duty, Guard and Reserve personnel 4,500 military personnel funded in FY15 General Education Development (GED) Used since 1942 to assess knowledge developed in a four-year high school education program Test consists of four tests designed to measure high school level of military personnel who are not high school graduates Nationally recognized opportunity to earn a high school equivalency credential DANTES fully funds test fee for Service members College Readiness

FY15 Highlights  Launched Tuition Assistance (TA) DECIDE ( –Provides information to inform educational choices –Search and compare more than 2,700 schools eligible for TA –Tailored to the unique needs of the military student –Facilitates counseling sessions  Implemented Automated Tuition Assistance Rate Tool ( –New tool within DoD VolEd Partnership MOU application system –Automates and streamlines the upload of TA eligible programs and associated tuition rate and fee information –Conversion to the automated TA Rate Tool by all DoD MOU Partnership institutions is anticipated Spring

FY15 Highlights  Consolidated Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC) Degree Network Systems (DNS) ( –Consolidated with no Service distinctions –Result: increased degree options for Servicemembers across participating Services—Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard 15

FY15 Highlights  DANTES Academic Information Management System (DAIMS) Release 2 –Facilitates academic score data transfer from testing agencies to Service transcript systems (JST, CCAF, AFAEMS) –Automated Service member reimbursement module providing electronic payments –Reduced PII exposure risk and decreased Service member reimbursement wait time 17

FY16 Initiatives  DoD Virtual Education Fair –GOAL: Increase Service members’ awareness of and connection to voluntary education opportunities –Pilot event 19 Nov with 43 schools and 7 government booths –Additional events being planned  Tutoring Services –GOAL: Assist Service members in achieving their education goals through academic support –Pilot provides on demand tutoring 24/7 at no cost to Service member in 40+ subjects 18

FY16 Initiatives  DANTES Education Services Advisory Committee (DESAG) –GOAL: Advise DANTES on program improvements and concerns within military VolEd –Education center personnel nominated by Service VolEd Chief  Virtual Training Series –GOAL: Assist service providers in understanding Defense education programs –Support workforce delivery of VolEd services 19
