Secondary Principal ’ s Report October 12, 2015

Mission Statement The mission of the Pender Public School District is to provide quality educational opportunities in a safe, positive learning environment that motivates and challenges all students to become productive and responsible citizens.

Homecoming Recap Students and parents decorated the school Students painted the windows downtown Bonfire was pushed one night because of wind, still was a big hit with the students On Thursday we had volleyball and the reading event with high school and elementary students Friday was a day filled with activities including games, the pep rally and coronation, and the dance following the game Our kids are in the process of writing an article about it for the Norfolk Daily News

Enrollment 7 th – 24 8 th – 16 9 th – th – 27 (+1) End of October 11 th – 22 (-1) 12 th – 28 Total = 143

Other Recent Events/Activities Constitution Day September 17 – Teachers did an activity in Advisory Group Study Halls – Provided by Mrs. Carda MAP Testing - Completed Secondary dates will run from September 21-October 2 APL Training October, 8 - Outstanding day of professional development that the teachers really found useful and enjoyed

FFA Announcement Our FFA program will be attending the State FFA Land Judging competition in Scottsbluff, Nebraska October 21 Congrats to Mr. Bartlett and the students for that honor!

Duke TIP (7-12 Gifted Program) The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a gifted educational program based at Duke University. Its stated purpose is to identify gifted children and provide them and their parents the resources for them to reach their full educational potential. Children are identified as part of the 7th Grade Talent Search with the most stringent qualification requirements (98 th percentile or better on the approved state testing exam in Reading and Math NeSA) Program is active and recognized in 16 states (including NE) 7th Grade Talent Search, students take the SAT or ACTSAT or

DUKE TIP Cont… Also runs several summer and weekend programs for academically gifted students Summer Studies (grades 7– 10) Field Studies and Institutes (grades 9–12) eStudies and eSeminars (grades 8–12) Scholar Weekends (grades 8–11) Independent learning opportunities are also available Pender Public Schools Currently has twelve 7 th grade students that qualify!!! 1 in reading only 8 in math only 3 in both reading and math This is incredible! Mr. Nixon has invited the parents to meet with him to explain the process if they want their kids to be involved Payment for entrance into the program is around $75 and that includes the ACT - Not asking just notifying

Softball I have been approached by a couple parents about the possibility of softball in the fall of 2016 They claim to have 4 or 5 girls interested in softball for next year. I had planned on doing a Title IX survey in November We are currently 1 female activity short in compliance My recommendation would be to explore this option and talk with B-R to see what their future is with W-P
