Proctor Caching Proctor caching refers to pre-caching (downloading) test content from the Pearson testing computer to a secure “local” computer prior to starting a test session. Because test content is closer to student workstations, test delivery is accelerated and the amount of bandwidth required for online testing is reduced. Audio files are very large content elements and must be cached to the school prior to the test beginning.
Proctor Caching: reduces burden on your ISP by eliminating redundancy in requests for test content. reduces testing delays due to network congestion. enables students to keep testing even when the Internet connection is lost (since test content is pre-cached). Proctor Caching - Benefits

> Support > Downloadswww.okassessments.com –Users must have administrative rights to download the software. –The software runs on both Windows and Mac OS X. –When installing the Proctor Caching script (Windows or Mac), you will be prompted for a parent proxy and port. You can either leave this blank or input your parent proxy address and port number if you have an existing proxy server that Proctor Caching must communicate with to access the internet. –Any computer that meets the system requirements for online testing can be used for Proctor Caching. –Cache Directories Windows: C:\Program Files\NCSPearson\Proctor Caching\CACHE Mac: /private/var/run/proxy/ Proctor Caching – Download & Install
Downloading Test Content (Pre-Caching a Test) –Pre-cache before students test. –Change browser settings. –Pre-cache test content. –Change browser settings back. Proctor Caching – Pre-Caching
Configure TestNav Clients –TestNav typically is configured during installation to use the Proctor Caching computer as a proxy server. If it was not configured during installation, follow the steps below. Edit the proxysettings.properties file in the TestNav folder to point to the Proctor Caching computer. Using a text editor (such as Notepad or TextEdit), open the proxysettings.properties file located in the same directory in which TestNav is installed. On the “Proxy_Host=” line, enter the IP address of the Proctor Caching computer. On the “Proxy_Port=” line, enter Purge Test Content –Test content should be purged from the Proctor Caching computer after a test administration is completed. Proctor Caching – Configure & Purge
TestNav This software is used by students to take tests. This provides a secure test environment. This is a Java-based client that looks like a browser. It is installed on servers or each workstation. TestNav 6.9
Download and install TestNav on each workstation used for Test Delivery. Configure each machine to communicate with the Proctor Caching server (proxy settings.properties file). It is more challenging to manage than a server installation. System automation tools like SMS (Windows) and Apple Remote Desktop (Mac) make local installs much more practical. Test Delivery – Local Installation
Download and install TestNav on a file share. Configure the file share installation to communicate with the Proctor Caching server (proxy settings.properties file). Create a shortcut to the file share installation of TestNav on each workstation used for Test Delivery. It is easier to manage than a local installation. Server Workstations Test Delivery – File Share Installation
The TestNav proxysettings.properties file is the only configurable settings file. This file can be edited with Notepad or TextEdit. Editable variables in proxysettings.properties –Proxy_Host - Designates a proctor caching or proxy server IP address –Proxy_Port - Designates a proctor caching or proxy server port number –Primary_Save_Location & Alternate_Save_Location - Designates the Early Warning save locations Student machine logins will need full access to these directories –TestNav/temp –TestNav/Logs –Early Warning Save Locations TestNav Installation Best Practices
Local Installation - If you use hard drive imaging tools like Deep Freeze, you must exclude the TestNav/Logs and Early Warning System save locations. Network Installation –Do not run the TestNav installer to the file share itself. –Run the installer on a client workstation and then copy the client's TestNav folder to a mapped network drive. –Once copied to the network drive, edit the proxysettings.properties file to have valid file paths for the save locations. –Use mapped drives for all paths. TestNav Installation Best Practices
DO use Proctor Caching. DO use a local installation of TestNav. DO NOT overload access points with too many clients. Wireless Networks Best Practices
Support – > Support > Reference Guideswww.okassessments.com –TestNav Early Warning System Reference Manual The TestNav™ Early Warning System (EWS) is designed to save student responses locally in the event of a network interruption. EWS saves the student's responses to an encrypted backup file so the student can either continue testing or exit the system without losing data. –Designate two (2) file save locations for student responses in the event of a connectivity loss to the testing servers. –Students must have full access to the designated “save locations”. –When connectivity is restored and the students resume the test, the locally saved responses are transmitted to the testing server and added to the responses already stored there. This activity occurs in the background of the test delivery software while the software continues to provide test questions to the student. TestNav Early Warning System (EWS)
TestNav can be forced into the EWS. –Setting false save locations –Pulling the network connection after logging in The EWS presents no additional security risk to test items or student data. –Note that student responses, but not test items themselves, are saved locally by the EWS. –Responses are saved in an encrypted format. –The encrypted responses file is automatically erased when the responses are uploaded to the testing server after the connection is reestablished. The EWS synchronizes with session management by means of the Resume Test functionality on the Session Details screen, which allows you to upload a student’s response file to the testing server when the connection to the server is reestablished. –Resume - no file to be uploaded –Resume–Uploaded - the system uploaded a student response file to the server TestNav EWS cont.
1.TestNav client determines that neither Early Warning Save Location is viable. –The student is immediately notified via an EWS on- screen message. 2.TestNav is unable to download portions of a test. –The student is immediately notified via an EWS on- screen message. 3.TestNav is unable to upload responses. –The student is notified via an EWS on-screen message only when submitting the test. Student Data
The primary student data activities are student data file submission and managing student data (student data information).
A permanent student is a student who’s student data has been loaded from the Wave directory. A temporary student is a student who has been loaded by student data file upload or has been manually entered and does not match a student in the state level Wave directory. Note: A temporary student only becomes permanent when the student data is loaded from the Wave directory. Manage Student Directory – Permanent vs. Temporary Students
How are students created? Permanent students have been uploaded into PearsonAccess from the Wave directory. (The student data does not include test specific data.) Submitting an SDU file creates new temporary students who are not already in PearsonAccess. Manually adding a student through the new student wizard creates new temporary students who are not already in PearsonAccess.
Manage Student Data Student Data > Student Data Information The Manage Student Data screen allows you to view and to modify permanent and temporary students.
Student Data Upload (SDU)/Precode SDU/Precode files submitted via SchoolHouse will automatically be uploaded into PearsonAccess. Users who submitted files via SchoolHouse will be able to view the status of their upload through PearsonAccess by 10/21/10. Users who have not submitted SDU files should begin submitting files through PearsonAccess at any time.
Before you submit a file, make sure that your file meets the student data file specifications. There are three resources available to you: Student Data Upload Layout that defines the requirements for all fields, Student Data Upload Instructions, and Student Data Upload Template. Refer to the Student Data File Specifications at -> Support Tab -> Templates Category Submit SDU File

Test Sessions An online test session is a group of students who take the same test at the same time and place. You may begin creating test sessions 11/11/10.
An online test session must be created before students can begin an online test. Manage Test Sessions - Creating New Test Sessions
By viewing the Currently Scheduled Sessions screen, you can filter on test-session values such as session name, status, start date, test, and school. Manage Test Sessions – Currently Scheduled Sessions
Once a test session has been created and students have been added, you will need to start the test session in order for students to log in on the day of testing. Starting/Stopping Test Session
Authorizations are needed to access TestNav: Student Authorizations Seal Codes Authorizations
Each student must have a student authorization ticket in order to log in to a test. Student authorization tickets contain the URL that students enter into TestNav to access a test, a unique Login ID, the Test Code needed to log in, and keystrokes available for navigating through TestNav. Authorizations - Student Authorizations
Seal codes are the electronic equivalents of the adhesive tabs that are used to seal sections of paper test booklets. Before students in a test session can go to the next sealed section of an electronic test, they must enter the appropriate four-digit seal code, which then “opens” the seal on that test section. Authorizations - Seal Codes
It is recommended to Proctor Cache before beginning a test session. Proctor Caching refers to pre-caching (downloading) test content from the Pearson testing server to a secure “local” computer prior to starting a test session. Proctor cache your test session 24 hours prior to beginning online testing. Proctor Caching
