HOW IT WORKS The digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube from the mouth to the anus Inside this tube is a lining called the mucosa. In the mouth, stomach, and small intestine, the mucosa contains tiny glands that produce juices to help digest food. Two solid organs, the liver and the pancreas, produce digestive juices that reach the intestine through small tubes.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT When we eat bread, meat, and vegetables, they are not in a form that the body can use as nourishment. The things we eat and drink must be changed into smaller molecules of nutrients before they can be absorbed into the blood and carried to cells throughout the body. Digestion is the process by which food and drink are broken down into their smallest parts so that the body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy.

DIGESTION Digestion involves the mixing of food. Its movement through the digestive tract, and the chemical breakdown of the bigger molecules of food into smaller molecules. Digestion begins in the mouth, when we chew and swallow, and is completed in the small intestine.

NEED TO KNOW FACTS For every 2 weeks the human stomach produces a new layer of mucous lining, otherwise the stomach will digest it’s self. The liver preforms 500 different functions and it weighs about 1.6 kilos being the heaviest internal organ of the body. Liver cells take several years to replace themselves. The human stomach contains about 35 million small digestive glands.

FACTS CONTINUED.. The stomach also produces about 2.5 liters of gastric juice everyday. In an average person it takes about 8 seconds for food to travel down the food pipe, 3-5 hours in the small intestine, and 3-4 days in the large intestine. The body takes 6 hours to digest a high fat meal and 2 hours for a high carbohydrate meal.

DISORDERS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM One of the most sensitive components of the human body is the digestive system. It's easily upset by disease, emotional factors, and even other parts of the body. Around 70 million Americans are affected by digestive system diseases.

CROHN’S DISEASE Crohn's disease is a form of inflammatory bowel disease. It usually affects the intestines, but may occur anywhere from the mouth to the end of the rectum (anus). The cause is unknown. It’s when your body's immune system attacks and destroys healthy body tissue. Crohn’s disease may occur at any age, it usually occurs between

GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GERD) More than 30 million Americans have been diagnosed with GERD. The most common symptom is heartburn that climbs from the stomach to the throat or middle of the chest. GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter doesn't close correctly, allowing digestive juices plus stomach contents to travel up the esophagus. Untreated GERD can lead to more serious conditions. Treatment consists primarily of dietary changes and prescription medications.

ROAD TO A GOOD DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Have good exercise. Don’t eat food with high fat contents. Eat moderate amounts at a leisurely pace. Don’t eat while stressed. Don’t eat in a stressful environment.
