Rothersthorpe CE Primary School The New National Curriculum & Assessment Without Levels September 2015

The new National Curriculum was introduced by the DfE in 2014 for all years except Y2 and Y6. From September 2015 all pupils are working from the new curriculum. Reception class work from the Early Years Framework.

Previous Curriculum was assessed using levels Year 2 (Expected 2b) Year 6 (4b) New Curriculum = No levels – (Year group objectives)

DfES Ethos: Depth of knowledge; ability to apply knowledge into other contexts. Learn/Master a concept thoroughly before moving on to the next. Up to schools to choose their own method to monitor progress

Previously ‘Above expected’ children moved up to the next level. Now work from own year group - improve their depth of understanding through using/applying skills. To ensure challenge we have provided ‘exceeding objectives/targets’ Can move to a higher year group for spellings, times tables There may be some children working from the year group below. Gifted &Talent - Next year group may be possible! A Challenging New Curriculum

What are we doing about assessment without levels? Updated our pupil targets to match new curriculum Created a set of ‘exceeding objectives’ – depth/challenge Purchased a new computer tracking programme (itrack) Sats training Reporting to parents New Baseline assessment for Reception class & Online Learning journey

Maths: Ms. Cordell-Edwards Example of Y6 expected objective * I can add and subtract fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers, using the concept of equivalent fractions Example of Y6 exceeding objective *I can create a scaled model of an historical or geographical structure showing an acceptable degree of accuracy using known measurements. Example of Y2 expected objective *I can solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in context Example of Y2 exceeding objective *I can add and subtract fractions with a common denominator.

Your Turn! Can you solve these questions? Expected 1)1⅓ + 2⅜ = 2)Which two calculations are the same? 10 x 3 -5, 4+1 x 5, 5 x (2+3)

Writing: Mrs. Walker Example of Y6 expected objective I can use the semi-colon, colon and dash. Example of Y6 exceeding objective I can use the subjunctive in the most formal writing to express a wish or a suggestion for the future. If I was rich, I would buy a Ferrari. If I were rich, I would buy a Ferrari. It is essential that the game begin at once. The game needs to start now. Example of Y2 expected objective I can use apostrophes to show where letters are missing and to mark singular possession in nouns. don’t do not Fred’s horse The five horse’s raced. Example of Y2 exceeding objective I take time to describe characters and events within stories, rather than move from one event to another.

Reading: Mrs. Raven/Mrs. D’Costa Example of Y6 expected objective I can evaluate the impact of the grammatical features/techniques used to create mood, atmosphere, key messages, attitudes. Example of Y6 exceeding objective I can present a counter-argument in response to others’ points of view using evidence from the text and explanation (Point, evidence, explanation) Example of Y2 expected objective I can make sensible predictions about what is likely to happen in the story and to different characters. Example of Y2 exceeding objective I can extract information from non- fiction texts, appropriately using contents, index, chapter, headings and glossary.

Assessments Summative Termly tests (3 times a year) Sats Formative Assessing informally all the time. Objectives/targets

Foundation Stage (EYFS) – Early Excellence Baseline End: FS Profile Year 1 Phonics Test (as previous) Year 2 SATs tests – R, W & M plus new SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar) Year 6 SATs tests. – R, W & M with new Arithmetic paper (No mental maths paper) Y1, Y3, Y4 & Y5 Test Papers (as normal)

DfES Assessment Criteria Sats outcomes expressed as a scaled score e.g. 100 being the expected score for their age Results benchmarked across England ‘after being marked’ to find the ‘average’. Above 100 = above age-related expectations.

Report on pupils attainment against ‘age related expectations’ for their year group in the July (Summer) report. (Autumn/Spring Reports– focus on children’s achievements and targets) Below age related expectations (as usual) In-line with age related expectations (as usual) Above age related expectations (as usual) Effort grade (as usual) Teacher comments (as usual) Rothersthorpe Reporting to Parents

New Curriculum – Increased Challenge! To achieve ‘above age related’ - achieve all the ‘expected’ and most of the ‘exceeding targets’. Achieving ‘age-related’ means your child has made excellent progress. Achieving ‘Above age-related’ means your child has made ‘exceptional progress’. Note: A child may have made excellent progress even if they are working below age- related expectations. (Relative to starting points).

Progress is Key We are in the Top 20 of schools in Northamptonshire for pupil progress. Excellent progress is always our aim.

School Priorities for 2015/16 Maintaining excellent progress for all, in all subjects with the New Curriculum and Assessment without Level Strengthening Pupil Voice Class 4 extension!! (approx. £35,000. We have saved £15,000 so far. Any grant or business willing to fund?) Our ‘Friends’ are saving for a playground feature – castle, pirate ship, sandpit, mini slide

Rothersthorpe CE Primary School Pride, Ability, Positivity We have excellent teaching, excellent pupils and an excellent community
