 Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia on February 22, 1732  Oldest son of Nine Siblings  Parents were Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington.

 Never attended any school or college.  Educated as a child by his father.  Self educated as he became an adult.  Favorite subject was math.  Studied:  Mathematics  Surveying  The classics  Rules of civility

 Father died when George Washington was 11.  Death ended plans for George to go to England to be educated like his other brothers.  Learned social graces from his mother  Good conversation  Correct table manners  Proper entertaining  Social skills helped be relieved with elder.  Helped consider him for advancement  Hard worker  Began a journal at 16  Good handwriting  Learned surveying  At 17 started own business as a surveyor  Physically active and Strong  Described by Thomas Jefferson as best horseman of his age.  Loved fox hunting from horseback.

 A member of the Anglican church  Made many references to God and the bible in his public statements and private letters
