Baldrige Our school is a Baldrige school. The purpose of Baldrige is to help students take more ownership of their learning in and out of the classroom. As a class, we have each developed a classroom “Vision” statement of how we see our class. Our “Mission” statement describes how we will accomplish our vision throughout the year. We have also brainstormed the characteristics of a “Quality Student” and “Quality Teacher.” These are expectations for each other to help us reach our Class Vision and Mission.

Mr. Glenn’s Class: Vision Statement We, the students in Mr. Glenn’s class, are honest and creative leaders. We are a family who respects one another, cares about the well-being of others, and we will always be role-models.

Mr. Glenn’s Class: Mission Statement Mr. Glenn’s class is a family who will listen in class and stay focused! We will cooperate with one another and participate in order to be championship learners!

Mrs. Larson’s Class: Vision Statement We should help others at all times. Everywhere we go we will be the example and set the example. We want to show that we are the "Buddy and not the Bully". We want to show our true character even when an adult is not looking. We will settle arguments in a peaceful way by talking our problems out with the other person.

Mrs. Larson’s Class: Mission Statement When we have problems that can't be solved by ourselves we will go to Mrs. Daniels or teachers to help us through it. We are going to be aware of others and ask them if they are okay. We are going to show leadership qualities by being a "Bucket filler” everyday. We will accept people as they are. We will be respectful by listening and not talk without permission. We will show our self-control by working independently and when transitioning.

Ms. Domagalski’s Class: Vision Statement We are Champions of Hope and can achieve ANYTHING if we put our minds to it! We will never give up on our DREAMS!

Ms. Domagalski’s Class: Mission Statement We will “Follow the Dream” by earning high scores, passing all of our SOL’s, showing responsibility, always trying our best, and having a good attitude even when tasks are difficult.

Language Arts Unit 1: Word Analysis - synonyms, antonyms, homophones, context clues Unit 2: Fiction - character traits, plot development, main ideas/details Unit 3: Nonfiction - organization of a story, headings, graphs, charts Unit 4: Research - using a computer, internet, almanac, and encyclopedia

Math (cont.) Students have a new math textbook we will be using throughout the year (called Math Connects). This book can be accessed at home online. Login information is on a sticker in students’ agendas. Written Math homework is assigned 1-2 nights each week to reinforce concepts and strategies taught in class. EXPECTATIONS… all 5 th grade students should know their 0 – 12 multiplication facts by the middle of October.

Math (cont.) Word Problems are extremely important in 5 th grade!! I will use the following 4-step strategy to attack word problems: Understand – Plan – Solve - Check Understand - What is the question asking? Plan -Do I need to add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve? -- Draw a picture Solve - Get an answer to the word problem! Check -Does your answer make sense? -Is there another way to solve the problem?

Homework 5 th graders are expected to write homework in their agendas everyday AND take agendas home!! Math: Homework assigned daily –1-2 nights of written homework each week Word Problems & Written Responses to Essential Questions –Study math terms or log into Study Island when no written homework is given Science: Study notes (Monday through Thursday) from notebook and study guides Language Arts: Read for at least 20 minutes (Monday through Thursday); Writing homework will be assigned 1-2 nights each week (Monday through Thursday)

PWCS New Homework Policy The nightly reading program should be the primary source of homework for all of our students. In general students should be assigned no more than ten minutes of homework per grade level (60 min for 5 th grade).
