2 nd grade Orientation For math! What your child needs to know to be successful in Math – based on the Readiness Standards

Place Value Use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers up to 1, 200 (2.2B) Examples: Standard form - just the number – 125 Word form – the number in words – one hundred, twenty – five Regular Expanded form – an addition equation that shows the number’s value for each place = 125 Break Apart Expanded form – an addition equations that decomposes the number in parts – =125

Comparing Numbers use place value to compare and order whole numbers up to 1, 200 using comparative language, numbers, and symbols (>, <, or =) (2.2D) Vocabulary: Less than, Greater than, Equal to *hint: the alligator mouth always eats the biggest number* Home practice: when you are at the store or restaurant, compare prices of items

Fractions Part of a whole, when the whole is divided into equal pieces explain that the more fractional parts used to make a whole, the smaller the part; and the fewer the fractional parts, the larger the part (2.3B) Home practice: pizza, graham crackers, sharing a whole with someone ½¼1/8

Word problems Solve one-step and multi-step word problems involving addition and subtraction within 1000 using a variety of strategies based on place value, including algorithms (2.4C) Generate and solve problem situations for a given mathematical number sentence involving addition and subtraction of whole numbers within 1, 000 (2.4D) = Adding by place value, base ten blocks in 1 st semester Later, 2 nd semester, teach the algorithm Make up problems with your child to solve

Geometry classify and sort three-dimensional solids, including spheres, cones, cylinders, rectangular prisms, including cubes as special rectangular prisms based on attributes using formal geometric language (2.8B) classify and sort polygons with 12 or fewer sides according to attributes, including identifying the number of sides and number of vertices (2.8C) Find and identify shapes in everyday life!

-Vertices -Edges -Faces -Vertices -Edges

determine a solution to a problem involving length, including estimating lengths (2.9E) Vocabulary: inch, foot, yard, mile, centimeter, meter Home practice: use a ruler or measuring tape

Telling Time read and write time to the nearest one-minute increments using analog and digital clocks and distinguish between a.m. and p.m. (2.9G ) Home practice – help your child read an analog clock at wake up, breakfast (a.m.), dinner, bed, homework, and bath time(p.m.)!

determine the value of a collection of coins up to one dollar (2.5A) 1 st, put the money in order from greatest value to least and then count by patterns , 20, 25, 26, 27 25, 35, 40, 41, 42 25, 50, 60, 65, 66 Home help: count change around the house, let your child have a penny bank

Write and solve one-step word problems involving addition or subtraction using data represented within pictographs and bar graphs with intervals of one (2.10C) Intervals – what the graph counting by Scale – what each unit is worth

Year at a Glance Grade 2 Mathematics Bundle At–A-Glance BundleUnit Title Bundle 1 Whole Number Place Value Part 1 to 200 and Telling Time Whole Number Addition and Subtraction Coins and Personal Financial Literacy Bundle 2 Data Analysis 2D Shapes and 3D Solids and Relationships between them Fraction Concepts Bundle 3 Whole Number Place Value Part 2 to 1,200 Whole Number Addition and Subtraction Part 2 Bundle 4 Multiplication and Division Measurable Attributes of Length in Problem Solving Situations

Homework Tuesdays and Thursdays – something for review to be done in the notebook Short math homework given for now, while students focus on become excellent readers! Later in the year, I will assign pages from the book for Tuesday or Thursday night

Welcome to Second Grade for Reading

Reading Expectations In order for students to be at grade level they need the following: Read fluently with good comprehension. Read independently for a sustained period of time. Build stamina -20 min. independently

Reading Benchmarks  16/I at the beginning of the school year.  28/M end of school year  Read and understand non-fictional text.  Master second grade high frequency words.

Leveling Books How to (at home): Literacy Leveler Scholastic Book Wizard Level It

Helping your child at home Reading Strategies: Before, during, and after.

Homework Homework assignments are issued on Mondays and turned in on Fridays Reading log signed daily Read 20 min. every day
