CAN A NURSE PRACTICE AS CLINICIANS THAT BLEND CLINICAL EXPERTISE IN DIAGNOSING AND TREATING HEALTH CONDITIONS WITH AN ADDED EMPHASIS ON DISEASE PREVENTION AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT ?

 Nursing has evolved from being perceived as being “handmaidens to the doctors” to that of health care professionals.  Nurses as Angels of Holistic Healthcare.

 Empowerment is viewed as a desirable and positive concept that incorporates energy and impetus to do good for ones’ self and others within a nursing context.

 In India today the nurse has a choice to be educated into the nursing profession by completing  A Diploma  A Degree  A Masters Degree  A doctorate (PhD)

 The Indian Nursing Council believes that there is a great need to establish a postgraduate program titled,Nurse Practitioner in Critical Care to meet the challenges and demands of tertiary health care services in India which is reflected in the National Health Policy (NHP draft document 2015) in order to provide quality to critically ill patients and families.

 A clinical residency program  A strong Clinical component with  20% - theory and skill labs  80% of clinical experience  Competency based training  (adapted from International Council of Nurses2005, and NONPF competency 2012

The critical care NP program prepares registered BSc nurses for advanced practice roles as clinical experts, managers, educators and consultants leading to M.Sc degree in critical NP.

 On completion of the program the NP will be able to  Assume responsibility and accountability to provide competent care to patients and family  Demonstrate clinical competence in diagnostic reasoning, complex monitoring and therapies

 Apply theoretical, patho-physiological and pharmacological principles and evidence base in implementing therapies /interventions in critical care  Identify critical conditions and carry out interventions to stabilize and restore patients health and minimize/manage complications  Collaborate with other HCP  Develop critical thinking skills
